With HHS' struggle from the outside, I was a bit surprised to not see Hudy in more and getting some shots. Did he and I missed him or did he not shoot?

He got some minutes. I don't remember him getting off a shot. The defense denied any decent looks for him. The only uncontested 3 the Birds attempted was a miss by Johnson in 1st half. Just an outstanding game at both ends for CCH.

*Cough* I said last week the first round game at HC decided the 9th region champ and I'll stick by it. No team that made the regional tourney had the overall talent to beat CCH.

Another possible Warren Central matchup. How many times has the 9th Region had to play them in recent years? Too many that I care to remember.

 

In '02 Ryle lost to Warren Central in the 1st round.

 

In '03 St. Henry lost to eventual state champs Mason County, in the 1st round.

 

In '04 Cov Cath lost to eventual state champs Warren Central in the semi-finals.

 

In '05 Holmes lost to Warren Central again, who finished as the state runner-up.

CCH's ball pressure killed Vories & the Birds early on. Eventually Vories calmed down and the offense got going, but not until CCH jumped out to an 18-4 lead.

 

Danny Noll was en fuego - it was surprising to me that HHS did not make more adjustments to keep someone on him. He had a lot of open looks...

 

Both teams played hard and there were some pretty hard fouls (both on and away from the ball). Kudos to the officiating crew to keep an emotional game under control.

I thought the big difference in the game was that Highlands really attacked the basket late in the first quarter and in the second. They got away from doing that in the second half partly due to CCH's defense. HHS was never going to win a shooting contest with CCH, which is what they turned it into in the second half. Good luck to both remaining teams. On a side note, Simpson is the best on the ball defender in the region.

BTW, CCH asst coach Dick Maile was not at the game because he was being honored by the SEC in Nashville. I knew I saw him walking along the baseline. I'd recognize that gait anywhere.

I thought that was him I saw on TV at the SEC tourney. Good to see his grandson got to get in the game at the end last night.

The great thing about Noll's 30 points? I would assume it's still less than his ACT score. You have to love seeing kids like Noll get to shine on nights like this. Great, very smart kid.

Yeah he is brilliant. I heard that if you add up the ACT scores of the 3 Colonel big men (Noll, Young, and Schult), it comes out to be 97! Real testament to CCH academics coming first.

 

Noll has a shot at tourney MVP with a good showing tonight.

I don't recall who Simpson guarded last night, but both Timmy and TJ had good games. I don't know what would make that claim legitmate. He is probably Highlands top defender and overall player though and will have nice junior and senior seasons.

Simpson had quite a few nice defensive plays - I don't know that I would call him the top defender in the 9th, but he was definitely one of the top defenders last night. He had at least 2 blocks.

He will be back, but only slightly before gametime I believe. BTW Coach Schrand took over the offense in Maile's absence and did an excellent job.

He's very good at taking the ball to the hole and finishing(not as easy as it sounds)-especially baseline. He's also very good in a set offense with his slashes to the basket when he doesn't have the ball. You can win with this kid. He has some work to do with his ballhandling against pressure and needs to tighten up the outside shot but he's skilled.

 

 

I will disagree with you on Vories' need of work in the ballhandling dept. They had 2 quick guards with 4 hands swatting at the ball each time he lost it so I would say CovCath's swarming defense had a lot to do with that. One on One he will dribble circles aroudn anyone... you saw his ballhandling skills. You cut him off going right... he dribbles behind his back the same way he dribbles in front of him. I will agree that he lacks the same confidence on his jumper that Jacobs and a couple other CCH players do and that comes with practice. I know he puts the extra hours in when they are not practicing.... that is fact.

 

I didnt think the supporting cast came through last night and CCH's did. Tanner had a nice first half but cch got in his head in the 2nd half and he got frustrated. Guidugli never could get a rythym....Simpson tried the best he could and Smith was mediocre at best, gave 110% but not much of a factor. I thought McGraw came in and played hard also.... he will be a good one next year as they allow him to shoot and drive more.
