Highlands and Covington Catholic will be in the east, along with teams such as Anderson County, Madison Southern, Pulaski County, Southwestern and Harlan County.

 

Bowling Green will be in the west with Christian County, Owensboro, the Bullitts, Oldham and South Oldham, and a handful of Louisville schools.

Saw this last night, but didn't have time to answer either. I am not as close to the players, but can tell you what I know and what others close to the program have said. It's not like it's a big secret and I don't think we need to predict what 8th graders and freshman are going to do. I'm not even going to go that far.

 

As for the next two seasons, I think the Birds come back to reality a little. But that just means they aren't on the level of "untouchable" by some opponents the way they have been for the last 8-10 years. It doesn't mean they won't be good, I just don't think we'll see all the blowouts like we have in the past and when we step across the river to play the GCL teams, may be a little more challenging for us. I just think we'll be in more dog fights than were used to, which isn't a bad thing.

 

I have said on here before, I think they have a lot of good football players coming up, but maybe not as many as the past. The good ones should be as good as they always have...just in my opinion, not as many good ones. For example, in recent history, HHS has had sophomores that could have starred for many other teams. But they weren't making the field on Friday nights because there was someone ahead of them. They had to wait their turn. Prime example. Our QB (Houliston) goes down with an injury and sits out a game. Our back up (Hoge) comes in and throws 7tds against Warren Central. Kid couldn't even get on the field at QB, but has the ability to step right in, throw 7 tds and put 71 points on the board. Thats nice! This is where I think it gets a little tougher, not just at QB. I think over the next two years, it will be all hands on deck. Using all the talent together from all classes. So injuries could play a big part. Yes, next man up! But that next man may not be as athletic as what we've put in the game recently. I also think they may need to get a little more creative on the platooning. Maybe not as much subbing. Or you may see the elite athlete go both ways in certain situations. I have no idea. Just throwing stuff out there.

 

But I will tell you this, I have all the confidence in the world in our incredible coaching staff. HHS' advantage for a long time has been the ability to turn mediocre football players into studs. The also are brilliant at maximizing the talent and skills they have in the players. They adapt season to season and utilize the strengths of each class to their advantage. Being a smaller school, they have to do that to survive and maintain the success level every year. They are outstanding at player development and adaptation.

 

The other thing has been mentioned already. I don't care if the next two classes coming through are the worse they have ever had (they aren't and not even close!), they have all drank the kool-aid since they could walk. They have all spent time throwing a football around in the end zone before and after every HHS game, pretending to be their hero they just watched play. They have all sat around together when they were younger and discussed what its going to be like when it's their time to put on that uniform. They have traveled all over the state following their heroes to all corners to watch them play. This is what the kids in Ft Thomas do and I can guarantee you, they aren't going to waste "their time" in the uniform. No matter who they play, you are going to be in a dog fight. We are talking about HHS football. They are the prime example of the ole cliche "Refuse to Lose" and I wouldn't surprise me if these next two classes (who many think are considered "down") figure out how to be successful, don't miss a beat and win state championships. It's what they do!

As a footnote to the 1995 team, Highlands lost their starting QB (Matt Mason) against Holmes (Holmes was very very good that year). I am not saying that Highlands would have won, had Matt played, but I do think it would have been interesting or maybe more interesting. Bowling Green was obvously every good so who knows. Game was fairly close, but Highlands did struggle on offense as I remember.

 

Also, Highlands frosh QB that year was Jared Lorenzen and I don't know if it was every seriously considered, but there was a bit of a discussion whether Highlands would turn to their frosh phenom to lead them the rest of the way in the playoffs. In the end the Birds turned to jr. PJ Sauer, who led them to the state runner up finisih in 1995 and a state title in 1996 (Justin Frisk's senior year) before turning in over to Jared.

And Mason was a stud! Undoubtedly would have helped! Not many teams can lose their stud Senior QB and recover to make the state championship and compete with a very good team.

As far as Bowling Green is concerned, this year and next year will be the time to beat them, after that look out. They have some very special classes on the horizon.

Reason I brought it up was beginning in the 6 class system, NKY class A was switched to the west. I still haven't seen a new region matchup grid but the fact they have a high district number compared to the west districts it makes sense they are in the east.

BG fans crack me up, tell me again about all of the Championships you guys won when Highlands and CovCath were in your class last time? It was only once, so it shouldn't be a real long story.

 

You've had a great three+ year run, and you should be very proud of that, but you get some company in your class next year, so let's sit back and see what happens.

Not sure why you guys took my question the way you did. Simply interested in how you think the upcoming classes of players look in your opinion. No hidden agendas, just curious. If you don't want to answer or don't know answer, no biggie.
