NKY Football Coaches Poll Week 3

Featured Replies

Your right Highlands is 1-1 against Collins the last two years...would you trade that 2-0 record for what the one win Highlands got the last two years...thought so....games that mean something!

You sound awful defensive for a fan of a program with such a spectacular record. You know something we don't?

Your right...their are some teams that stride to be the best in the state and their are some teams that strive to be the best 6A Nky team.

You have to be the best team in the county, the best in the district, the best in the area before you can be the best in the state.

I also agree that them jumping ahead of CovCath surprised me because of the level of teams that they each played. As far as the poll is concerned I also would have reservations about Lloyd as well. Beating Dayton and Holmes does not make me feel they have proven anything yet. Newport might even be in that same boat.

Which coaches get a chance to vote? And refresh my memory...but a coach is allowed to vote for themselves, correct? (Honest questions there.)

Assuming a coach can vote for their own team, and they can also vote for the teams that have defeated them, it could give a perfectly logical reason for Conner and Lloyd showing up on the list of schools that weren't in the top ten but did receive votes. And if you have reservations, then that would imply that a point is debatable, and thereby, there is a good chance that someone could argue things the other way. Reason would state that that team cold logically get some other votes. Long story short, I don't see a problem with it, and I don't see any teams that missed out on votes that deserved them, with the exception of Walton-Verona...and like the others, their place would be debatable.

Which coaches get a chance to vote?

Here's the list of teams from Northern Kentucky that I currently include in the NKY High School Football Contest. I would assume it's pretty close to those with coaches' votes in the NKY Poll, with maybe the exception of Bracken, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, and/or Owen. I'm assuming Pendleton is a no because their football team isn't currently a KHSAA member.

SC was an exception. And I address the Conner and Collins thing in the other post. It might be okay to have them on the schedule, but they can't be the teams that you feel are preparing you for the big boys later in the playoffs. Period. They are not teams that are going to challenge a good 6A team every year. Again, reach higher and take some chances. Don't put your hope in the fact that one team over the last however many years was able to win playing a weak schedule. That does nothing but provide hope. Why wouldn't you look to do something that you can control and that is the schedule that tests you. You SK fans have to know that can help, why do you just continue to defend the current system that clearing is not getting them to the next level. Either you're happy with being an above average team or have drank too much SK kool-aid and keep hoping that one day it will come true. I'd rather have control over my destiny and know that I did absolutely everything possible to prepare for the big boys I know I'm going to eventually see. Then if I fail, I can look myself in the mirror and say I gave my best effort. Again, just my opinion.

Look, I'm no SK fan, not even close, so no dog in the fight. Scheduling is important, no doubt. But as I've said many times here (about several teams), scheduling is the product of several things. Location and travel expenses are a piece that many fail to consider. Also, there has to be a mutual desire on both ends to play, as well as a mutual open date that fits in with each teams desired home/away slate. It's not always as simple as picking up the phone (although sometimes it is). Sure playing tougher teams may help you come playoff time (although it may not....ask last years team from Trinity). But does getting drilled by a GCL team help you?? Didn't help Highlands or Cov Cath last year. Harrison County and Holmes have spent the last 4 years getting drilled by Highlands and Cov Cath in district games, and those games haven't made their programs better. Another thing to consider, is you can't just section the schedule off by letting bad teams only play bad teams, average teams only other average teams, while the really good teams just play really good teams.

Teams also have to consider where there program is at, where it has been, and where you think it's going. SK shouldn't be taking heat for scheduling Conner (who's had a D1 QB the last 3 years and is moving to 6A next year) or Collins. Yes they are down this year, but that's going to happen. And Holy Cross is a bad game, but there are quite a few NKY teams that are playing HC. Sometimes in order to build a program and get the community interested, you've got to schedule games you know you will win. Colleges do it all the time. SK is one of those teams that is building something good, and their schedule has helped them get there.

I know nothing!:)

Agree.....just having some fun with Ukfan....take no offense Simon Kenton Fans.

To be blunt. I don't care about outsiders. We're talking about a coach's poll that ranked SK 2nd, up 1 spot. Those coaches are local and should know who the better teams are- unless their letting the diving coach fill it out for them.

I understand, but I think our conversation has moved passed the coach's poll.

You guys are so concerned with SK scheduling. The most significant change the program needs to get to next level is not scheduling. It is modifying the conditioning program to improve team speed. Every team SK has lost to in the playoffs has had significantly better team speed. SK is not going to have any 4 or 5 star athletes showing up anytime soon so the program needs to get better by paying more attention to speed, even if some strength conditioning has to be compromised.

I agree that would help. But let me ask you this, would scheduling teams that mimic playoff speed be beneficial prior to the playoffs. Seeing that type of speed once or twice, even if it resulted in a loss...would that help when it counts? Playing teams that you are bigger, stronger and deeper than lulls you into a belief that you are good and places you in a comfort zone. And to your point, the comfort zone is lifted when you face a team that can match your strengths, plus plays faster. I said last year that anytime they come up against a good team, they are deer in a headlights because they have never had to play that fast. In my opinion, it's because they don't see it in the regular season and they don't have to play fast. They bully all their opponents until they can't anymore.

Location and scheduling should not be an issue for a 6A team that wants to play someone. Trinity and HHS have been begging teams to play them in the past couple years. Teams like Cov Cath, BG and St X have also had issue filling the schedule. Let alone to looking right across the river. Why is it so hard for SK to schedule and no one else? There are several KY teams that play Oh teams. We are actually lucky to have the kind of football right in our back yard. And I have said this too...if I'm running a 6A program that has aspirations of contending, the first two calls I make when I takeover is HHS and Cov Cath. Both are always looking for games and both would make my team better. And neither are too far and would turn down games. Then I would put a quality cincy team and then possibly look for a down state quality opponent. I really don't understand what's so hard about that schedule. It really is a matter of making phone calls til someone says yes.

Okay, you may want to schedule some cupcakes occasionally if you believe that helps. And that might help generate some excitement, but what happens to that excitement if you never win a meaningful game? What happens to the excitement when you are winning games with a running clock because your opponent is awful? That excitement goes away real fast. Like I say, it was fool's gold. Eventually you have to do something to keep people interested. Hopefully next year that happens. What kind of buzz will be in the air when HHS and Cov Cath travel to SK to play. Think it will bring more excitement than HC, NCC or even the beloved Conner??? And what happens if SK beats Conner? Nothing, they should beat Conner. What happens if SK beats HHS or Cov Cath? Or for that matter even plays them really close. Program gets elevated. Don't give me examples about Holmes and Harrison. They are not SK. They have a lot of other things to fix before we are talking about them competing. SK is on the verge. Hopefully next year's schedule helps them realize what it's will take to get over the hump.

We played Scott County in back to back regular seasons a few years ago. It proved that they were faster than us. We scrimmage St. X and generally see them or T in the playoffs and they are faster than us. I don't think we get the deer in the headlights. We know our strengths and weaknesses. Last year our advantage was a D1 QB with your typical NKY HS receivers. We also had a huge offensive line that did well in pass block. Hard for the QB to throw to receivers that couldn't get open in the extreme cold. Just the way we were built. If James Quick or Ryan Timmons were in the slot, we'd brought home a trophy.

A lot of importance being placed on a week two coaches poll. IMO this is preseason football. Sure it is nice to get a win on Friday Night but the real reason for these games is to get your team ready for District and playoffs spots.

If SK feels this is what they need to do to get ready then so be it. As far as the schedule, 2 of the 3 teams they played are down severely this year so I will give them a pass on this.

The point I am trying to make is who cares who is number one or two in week two of the season. The most important thing is winning the last game of the season!

Now back to the show:popcorn:

I'm just excited that so many people want to talk SK Football.......:thumb:

Sorry, one more thing. You talk about not having all the bad teams play each other, etc. If I'm a 6a team looking to get to the top, I could care less what other teams are doing. I'm not going to play a lower division or quality team just because they need a good team to play. That's taking me backwards. I want to always move forward. I'm not going to play someone out of the goodness of my heart. All the good teams to stay good, must play other good teams that challenge them. You can throw out all the examples of the times is didn't work, but if you look over time, I bet it works way more than it fails. Way more positives come out of it than negative. You say it didn't help HHS because they didn't win state. I could say, if they weren't in a barn burner with Elder, they may have not have gotten the experience to even make it to the state game. I say playing Elder made the playoffs look easy to them, until they ran into a team on a mission!
