September 3, 201412 yr I've never owned a .45 and I am thinking about picking up a 1911. Frankly I am intimidated by the choices. I want reliability, accuracy and a smooth trigger. What are your suggestions?
September 3, 201412 yr Budget will do a lot to determine where you end up. Wilson, Springfield, Colt and many others make quality firearms at a variety of prices and are known for their 1911s. If you don't have a brand bias and are truly open minded you can find a nice 1911 across a wide range of prices. A lot of people get so fixated on one brand they kinda snub all others and are closed minded to other manufacturers. Here is one guys break down on manufacturers... 1911 ratings list | Gun Nuts Media My wife surprised me with a Springfield Armory "Range Officer" for Christmas last year...it is a LOT of GUN for the money...you might want to read up on them. IMO it's the best 1911 for the money you can get, may not be the best but I think it is the best value. Springfield Range Officer Review - Guns & Ammo
September 3, 201412 yr Author Thanks JD. I am totally unbiased as to brand. Not that fit and finish are completely unimportant, they aren't, but I won't be buying a weapon as a fashion piece. I look at it as a tool and I value function and reliability over everything else. Plus, I am as frugal as the next guy when it comes to major purchases so I can appreciate a good value. So as long as a particular brand meets the 3 requirements I listed, I am going to be happy. I'll read up on the RO model, thanks again.
September 3, 201412 yr Not a big fan of Kimber anymore, and it was my 2nd 1911, a Colt was the 1st. Not a huge fan of Springfield either, their marketing and name bother me, but they make good guns for the money. I hate the 80 Series trigger, most do, but will consider one. I currently do not have a 1911 right now but am looking at the following - Ruger Colt Remington STI Used High End -(Les Baer, Ed Brown, Nighthawk, Wilson Combat, Novak, etc.) I'm leaning toward the Ruger, then another Colt.......but really want a Nighthawk.

I shot the remington. It was like a clackety old febrile piece of aluminum. Junk. You can take the slide and wiggle it side to side on the rail, or at least the one I shot you could.
September 6, 201412 yr My son had a Springfield Range Officer. I will probably get one myself some day. An excellent choice for the price. I carry a Sig Sauer 1911 Ultra Compact. A smaller 1911 but also an excellent shooter.
September 7, 201412 yr Absolutely love the Colts. My Commander was one of my first handguns. Bought it way back in 1978. Still have it. Still shoot it. Never failed me yet.
September 14, 201511 yr Funny this thread just popped up, just went and shot my 1911 last week for the first time in quite a while.
September 15, 201511 yr Oh, I sold him my Kimber. He's got a jewel. Really? I thought you loved that 1911?
