Cooper 31 Newport Central Catholic 0

Featured Replies

First off let me say, NCC plays hard. They always have. Come time for them to play 2A ball, I wouldn't be surprised for them to blow right through it. Cooper looked better on offense tonight, and Prickett (sp) showed that he can chuck the ball around a little bit. Would not be surprised to see both of these teams make nice playoff runs.

Sounds good. I am sure they will rebound in the coming weeks and be ready come November.

Next 3 games will be "brutal", but they will be battle tested.

6A Campbell County

6A Simon Kenton

6A Dixie Heights

Last week. They also held Ashland to a shutout too though :)

Does this game cause concern on the hill?

Only if this were a 2A opponent.

Next 3 games will be "brutal", but they will be battle tested.

6A Campbell County - This could prove to be a challenge

6A Simon Kenton - This would be prime opportunity to knock this tough team off.

6A Dixie Heights - Good win chance for NCC

Those is what I think could be outcome of those games

Next 3 games will be "brutal", but they will be battle tested.

6A Campbell County -Based on the Highlands game tonight, NCC better be prepared to stop the run if they want any chance at this one.

6A Simon Kenton - If Cooper wins 31-0, SK will win by a wider margin than that.

6A Dixie Heights - We'll know more about Dixie after tomorrow, but right now I see little to no chance for a Breds win versus the red Colonels.

And there are my thoughts on the next three.

The new season did not get off to the start the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbred football team hoped for.

The host Cooper Jaguars (2-0) shut out the Thoroughbreds, 31-0 in their season-opener in Union. NewCath’s originally scheduled game was on Aug. 23 at Ashland. But it was rained out.

Cooper outgained NewCath, 341-147 in total offense. The Jaguars, led by 1996 NewCath alum Randy Borchers, have allowed just three points in their first two games. They opened the season with a 12-3 win over county rival Ryle.

“We were putrid,” said Dan Wagner, NewCath Head Coach. “I can’t think of any other word to use. We have a long way to go from personnel to coaching to everything. I know it’s the first game and you have to be realistic. But you have to be able to do something offensively. We’ll watch the tape and get better.”

The Thoroughbreds finished Class 2A state runner-up last year after winning the state championship in 2012. The Jaguars finished state Class 5A runner-up to Bowling Green in 2012.

The Thoroughbreds ran for just 34 yards on 27 carries and quarterbacks Erik Anderson and Patrick Henschen combined to complete just 11-of-26 passes for 113 yards and two interceptions. Senior wide receiver Brandon Gray had six catches for 53 yards.

Cooper also beat NewCath last year scoring the same amount of points. The Jaguars won it 31-22 in the Skyline Crosstown Showdown at Dixie Heights.

NewCath knew it had to contain Cooper junior running back Torey Cordell-Armstrong. Cordell-Armstrong rushed for 124 yards on 15 carries for an average of about 8.2 yards per touch.

But the Jaguars showed balance in the win. Senior quarterback Billy Prickett completed 13-of-15 passes for 178 yards, three touchdowns and rushed for another. Junior Chad Michels had five catches for 69 yards and a score.

Cooper scored once in the first quarter. Prickett completed a 49-yard touchdown pass to Michels with 37 seconds left and the kick failed leaving the Jaguars up 6-0.

“I thought we played decent defensively,” Wagner said. “We had them in third-and-long. They were getting ready to punt. We had kids in position. Suddenly, (Michels) comes down with the ball. You can’t give up big plays.”

The Jaguars extended their lead to 17-0 at halftime. Prickett completed a 5-yard pass to Dante Hendricks with 4:18 left before completing the two-point conversion to Clay Centers to put Cooper up 14-0. Mitchell Hollifield then hit a field goal as time expired.

The Jaguars did not score again until the fourth quarter. Prickett completed a 34-yard touchdown to Cole Willging with 11:45 left in the game before scoring from nine yards out with 4:21 left. Hollifield added both extra points.

Cooper did have one turnover. The Jaguars lost 1-of-2 fumbles and the Thoroughbreds did not lose any.

NewCath will try to rebound Friday at Newport Stadium against the rival Campbell County Camels (1-1). Game time is 7 p.m.

Fort Thomas Sports: Cooper shuts out NewCath, 31-0

Big win for Cooper. Perhaps N.C.C. took this game a little lightly?

Highly doubtful.

Big win for Cooper. Perhaps N.C.C. took this game a little lightly?

Don't base that on what you read on BGP. IF the players/coaches took this game as lightly as their fans did, they deserve what happened to them last night. I doubt very seriously that was the case.

The Breds offense in this one was not "clicking" to say the least, however the Cooper front line did a great job of stuffing out the run and had alot of pressure on Anderson the whole night. So. QB Patrick Henschen did a nice job in the 4th quarter for the Breds, kid throws a really nice ball.

Even though the Jags put up 31 points, the NewCath defensive line gave the Jags "fits" all night, except for the 70 yard run before the close of the half. The NewCath pass defense looks like last years, this needs to improve.

The Armstrong kid from Cooper has got some nice "wheels", played a hell of a game.

The two BLATANT pass interference calls that the Breds DID NOT get would not have changed the final outcome in this one, but how this crew could miss them is UNBELIEVABLE. The 1st one, Nate Enslen is pushed in the back at the Cooper 5 (possibly could have scored) and the Ref is 2 feet away . Enslen injuried on the play and doesn't return. This is the same Ref who was "light years " away from a play he flagged the Breds for pass interference earlier in the game. The 2nd one the Cooper defender was "trapped" all over the Breds receiver, and everyone had a "blind-eye".

Breds need to remain focused, improve week to week, and stay healthy. You only get better by challenging yourself.

I have to say something about what you say was blatant PI calls that didn't get called. The first one you are referring to the receiver didn't get touched. He went down on his own and came up hurt hat play. I was in the field and although he was covered by 2 players he went down on his own and wasn't touched. I thought it looked like he rolled his ankle or knee went out on him or something. I know the need fans in the stands combined about it but to be fair it was on the total opposite end of the field where they were and all they could see was the receiver going down with 2 defenders on him. He wasn't touched as he went down on his own and was hurt which as I said looked like he either turned his ankle or knee which made him go down. It was a good no call.

The other one, yea I thought cooper got by with one there but as you said it wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome.

I wanted to give some kudos to Coopers Devan Murray #34 a senior who came in on defense in this game aging a new position and he did an outstanding game. He had a couple tackles for a loss and kept NCC's running game contained to the inside in his side of the field.

Very good game by that young man who came in off the bench and may be tough to get off the field after that performance.

Those is what I think could be outcome of those games

Really don't see them beating any of these teams.

Announcer mention the Newcath kids as little as possible, Tallon lead the team in tackles with 14!!!

Don't base that on what you read on BGP. IF the players/coaches took this game as lightly as their fans did, they deserve what happened to them last night. I doubt very seriously that was the case.

I don't any NewCath fans took this one lightly. There are a ton of unknowns and NewCath is about a year away from a big year. This year will be about learning and improving. Tough learning curve playing against a Borchers coached team. Randy always has his teams ready. Three years in a row now he's had NewCath's number.
