I think the problem that people who are cynical or skeptical will point to is that many times' date=' these things wind up turning out like the NFL's "Breast Cancer Awareness" drive. How much of the money will actually wind up being used for important research and how much of it will end up pork? When people buy a pink NFL towel, they think, "oohhhh, I've done my part" when in reality, the contribution that they've actually made toward a productive cure isn't nearly what they think. That's my thoughts with it. That and if I donate or do something, I don't need to post a video of myself doing it or whatever. Are you skeptical of ALS Association?

I was talking about it with my cousin last night and we both wondered how much longer we'd have until we would be challenged. I woke up with a challenge from a beer vending buddy.

 

Did my deed this morning and donated more than my "required" amount $10 to the ALS Association.

 

For anyone to be even remotely cynical of this is a little silly to me, just look at the amount raised in 2014 vs. any previous year. I'm blessed to not know anyone hit by this disease, but I do have a friend whose grandmother died from ALS a few years ago and its something he cares dear about so I know he has to be happy to see how all this has taken off.

Even as cynical as I am I must say "WOW."

 

Are the companies getting something out of it? Probably so. However, if they simply wrote a check and made a private donation then there would be no awareness to the cause itself. So I'm all for the companies doing it because the charities ultimately win.

 

Here's the problem as I see it. If you look at a lot of the fine print for many of these promotions, you'll often see that the company puts a cap/limit on the amount that they're willing to donate. Why? If you want to make a difference, and you have people (customers) that are willing to step forward and help you do it (by making purchases), shouldn't you be willing to write a bigger check? And yes, if the charity receives $100,000 from the effort...then that's $100,000 more than they might have had otherwise. But, if people jump on board and raise enough for $1,000,000...why hold that back? So, yes, I am cynical about the intentions of a company that appears to wrap itself around a cause, but does something like that.

Home City Ice should donate a portion of the money on all of the ice they are selling. Now that would raise a few bucks.

Here's a new one for you. People who are negative about the ALS bucket challenge because its going to take money away from other charities that are usually receiving it from those individuals. Couldn't believe my eyes when I read it.

Always knew James Harrison was a nut...... But damn I could not imagine sitting i that for 10 minutes....

Did it back in May. After a practice swim for a tri I took my wetsuit off and jumped back in the lake. Donated the money to CASA and did it literally a minute after I got out of the water. One of their board members was down there doing the tri with me.

 

Not to take away anything from ALS but I liked it better when you could choose your own charity.
