Exactly. I think most will agree that without the coach's son, CCH does not win state and probably does not win region. Their PG was a awesome and unselfish player who made everyone else better. It is hard to argue against CCH because of the fact that they won a state title just three years later.

 

But no, Coach L is not on the same list as Brossart. Not even close. Coach L was at the school much much longer and a much bigger fixture. Coach L did great things at CCH and even came close to his own championship ten years earlier. He is a great guy who deserves another head coaching job and I am very glad he is getting another chance, just wish it wasn't at district rival Holmes. I was just using Brossart as an example to the fact that you can be forced out somewhere else or leave on bad terms and still be successful somewhere else. People usually learn more about themselves through defeat than through winning.

 

You could argue if Listerman got a raw deal or not. In a lot of ways he did. In his last few years, talent simply got a little dry outside of a few players. One year he had his first and second string point guards get sick and miss most of the season. This made him go way down the bench. But watching the last few years of his tenure were a little rough. His subbing seemed to have no rhythm and it seemed players stopped responding to him. A lot of that could have been the lack of talent (as compared to previous years) and players not being used to losing. Many agreed it was time for a change. Not to often do you see a coaching change were both parties are happy. Someone usually gets burned. It was unfortunate it had to be Listerman.

I would hope that Holmes would give it to Listerman for a year and then conduct a search. Given their stature as one of the best programs in the state they really don't need to settle for a coach their district rival disgarded.

This is just me speculating, but you have a good point. Holmes has the best basketball program in NKY. They churn out great players every year. They would probably get a ton of applicants from all around. They could be giving Listerman a year and if it is not as successful are the hope then they might go out and look. But who knows, they could plan on L being their for the long haul.

I'm a Cov. Cath. guy, but over the past 10 years they have been the best in NKY in my opinion. You're right though, there is a definite argument to be made for or against that though. I do not think that they will diminish with Coach L.

35th district is easily one of the toughest in the state with both Covcath and Holmes.

 

I've never been a fan of saying this team or that team will be better because of a coaching change...a coach is as good as the talent he has. From a pure X and O standpoint, a coach can only do so much. It is up to the players to execute.

 

But as far as Holmes goes this year...they return the best player in the region in Bolden and have a very good junior class. Can they win region? Sure. But just like any other year, it is going to be tough because of the level of competition in the 9th region.

 

Covcath and Newcath are both going to be really good and Dixie returns arguably the most experience in the region with that senior class, but lack the "go to guy" like the above three have.

 

Holmes' success will come down to how well they defend and consistency at both ends. I do think Coach L and the current staff will put the players in a position to be successful.

To frame my original comment...I don't necessarily equate having the best/most talent on a year end year out basis as going hand in hand with also having the best program. The two can be and many times are mutually exclusive from each other. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Holmes isn't the best program, and they obviously have had a lot of talent over the years, I just thought that maybe some NKY guys might debate the "best program" aspect of that comment.

I believe Covington Holmes has 13-14 Regional Championships on it's own, then you add Covington's 8 which is now Holmes then you are at 21-22 championships. Holmes has played in 4 state championships with CovCath playing in 2.
