Not long after a report came out that the Bengals and Andy Dalton were not close to a contract extension, there are now reports suggesting the same with Vontaze Burfict.

 

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports Burfict and the Bengals appear to have reached a wall in talks for a long-term extension.

 

It's a bit disheartening to hear the talks for both Dalton and Burfict may have broken down. However, this could a be a ploy by either the Bengals or Burfict's agent to put more pressure on the other side to get a deal done. This would be a major distraction this season if both Dalton and Burfict are playing on the final year of their contract.

 

Burfict is a restricted free agent, so the team does control his rights next offseason.

If I'm Burfict, I don't think I even consider playing the season under my current contract. I'd hold out until they signed me to a much bigger extension.

I said most off last year during the regular season that I expected a hold out by Burfict if he didn't have a deal before this season. Which I don't think he will start holding out now since training camp started, however if I was him I would. The guy is getting paid next to nothing and working on a rookie free agent deal basically. Pay the man!!!

And I feel pretty confident the Bengals will be somewhat fair with Burfict when the time comes.

This is the smart move, the ONLY way.. Yes I'll continue to be a broken record, the Bengals lose more money to Dalton is if he wins the SB. Wait another year and let's see if he's still average.

 

Sign Burfict as soon as you can he is a blue chip piece.

I tend to agree, however, he is so young and been so good, he won't come at a bargain. The guy has to get what he thinks his fair market value. The Bengals could leverage is he is under contract at peanuts and if he gets a serious injury he won't get anything. Burfict's leverage is he is a top 5 linebacker and will get paid that value if the Bengals don't. Best linebacker we have had in a long time. It will get done. This is just business right now.

Not at all! I am all for every pro player getting every penny they can.

 

My gut says VB is a great guy that's thankful the Bengals gave him the opportunity they have and VB is confident the Bengals will do him right when the time comes. In other words, VB is loyal, maybe to a fault.

I'd love to see VB signed long term. Very impressed with his play and the lack of extra curricular nonsense that we often see from NFL guys. Unless I have missed it, he's been a great add to the community, something I didn't expect based on his time at ASU.
