July 10, 201412 yr Reds need a bat at the break. Big time. It literally could be anywhere but catcher at this point. But they need an impact bat without giving up Stephenson and without taking on a big contract. If you're Walt, who do you call and ask about as trade options?

July 10, 201412 yr This question is up UKMF's alley. I would get Marlon Bryd from the Phillies. Put him in the 4 hole every day. The Reds should have picked him up this winter when they had the chance. He might cost a prospect but I do not think they would have to give up Stephenson to get him. Perhaps one of their middle relievers on the big club and a lower tier prospect. Move Skip to second and Ludwick becomes a reserve off bench and spot starter.
July 10, 201412 yr Chase Headley, Josh Willingham or Kendrys Morales could all benefit from playing in GABP and shouldn't be too expensive. It is a shame that Michael Cuddyer is injured right now, he'd be perfect.

July 11, 201412 yr makes you look better in a team fight as well. If you want to look good in a fight I'm sure the Red Sox would part with Jonny Gomes pretty cheaply.

July 11, 201412 yr Why not play Leake everyday somewhere, can't bat worse than Cozart. He stinks at hitting now and Cozart has gotten better. You can't be serious :lol2:
July 11, 201412 yr He stinks at hitting now and Cozart has gotten better. You can't be serious :lol2: I was gonna say, Cozart's on a tear. I couldn't believe it the other day when I saw Leake's BA and it was waaaaayyyy below Mendoza — now a hearty .125 — which makes you wonder what's wrong with him.

Seems like Headley would be a lot more expensive to get than the others, even though he's having a rough go of it this year. Guy like him helps with the infield problem, and you gotta figure he needs a change of scenery and would benefit from not being in SD. Pass on Willingham — he's struggling this year. Morales is much worse. Is that new park in Minnesota a hitter's graveyard?

Morales has only had 119 plate appearances so he's just at the point where a lot of hitter are when spring training is over. Willingham's average isn't good but he's hit 8 homeruns in 45 games. His average is not good but his OBP is .364--that's better than all of the Reds regulars except for Votto and Mesoraco and his OPS is .788 better than everyone except Mesoraco, Votto and Frazier--and it is almost the same as Votto. I'm sure both would be pretty cheap and the Reds don't really have much to offer in return.

But by the same token, his best years are clearly behind him, especially given his ability to stay healthy. That doesn't mean he can't be a short-term band-aid. I'd still rather have Headley or Byrd. If you get Byrd you're on the hook for $8 million in 2015 with a vesting option for another $8 million for 2016 if he gets either 600 plate appearances in 2015 or 550 plate appearances in 2015 with a combined 1100 plate appearances for 2014-15. He's 36 years old. Headley would be a free agent after this season. Josh Willingham would be a free agent after this season.
