I would much prefer somone take the time to actually determine what teams had big losses, who has key returnees, who has kids who might have stepped up in the offseason or even individual personal growth, etc. and give an educated opinion about how teams stack up against one another.

I agree with you to some degree. But there are some instances, like when a team has dominated for quite some time, where I believe the statement is a valid one. Bowling Green would seem to be one of those cases where I believe it applies. Probably throw Mayfield into the mix too.

I could not agree more. That statement is bad reasoning.

Just because Trinity lost doesn't mean the statement is proven false. People who believe that way aren't saying the team will certainly not lose. They're just choosing to rank them in the top spot until they are proven beatable. At times, I think it's the most logical conclusion to reach.

 

I've got Bowling Green at #1 in 5A & Mayfield at #1 in 1A. I don't know a lot about high school football, but I know those two teams in particular have been pretty dominating the last 2-3 years. I see it in the same light as picking a stock or a mutual fund that has proven reliable for a lengthy amount of time.

I disagree, I think it makes all the sense in the world to the teams it's usually applied to. It is often given to teams with a history of success, even domination of their class. Since nobody on here has the time to do the research you ask on the 2 hundred? teams playing KY high school football it makes sense to put those dominating teams at the top until someone proves they can beat them.

But I also think when a team has been dominant for 2 or 3 years, it's wise to place them at the top until someone knocks them off. And maybe I'm wrong on this, but it seems like this happens more in Kentucky HS football than it does Kentucky HS basketball.

I think we have two issues here. No, just because a team won a State Championship last year does not mean they should be number one this preseason. But, when you have a team that has not been beaten by a Kentucky team in, say, four years, yes they should be number one until "someone beats them".

 

The issue is not the phrase, it's the overuse of the phrase. Bowling Green should be number one, "until someone beats them". Mayfield should be number one "until someone beats them". Collins, should not be number one "until someone beats them".

 

In my humble opinion, the phrase has a place, but is often overused like so many phrases of the sort.

Sometimes the phrase "they are #1 till somebody beats them" is EXACTLY what should be said about a particular team. Mayfield is the perfect example. They have proven to be the standout of 1A the past handful of years, and there is NOTHING to say that anything should change that this year. So, as far as Mayfield is concerned, they are #1 till another 1A team knocks them off the roost.

 

Now, can this be said for EVERY class? Of course not. Some teams peak, have a monster year, then lose most all their studs to graduation and they fall back to the pack the next year and are not in the conversation for top contenders. Just depends on the team and what they have coming back.

Well each year I just assume that Highlands is the top team in the state. So in thrillville's rankings, they are number one until someone beats them.

I get your point. I wouldn't say it very often. But as RP and Ram said above, when you have a team like Mayfield or Highlands that lose a lot of talent and then come back the next year and win again, then they are #1 unless it is obvious they have lost so much that it is they shouldn't be #1.

Most people did do just that, but there were some of us who made the statement that T was not #1 and made that statement long before the season was even half way through and may I add I caught all kinds of beef over that also.

In the Top 5 6A thread, there are many folks putting X in the top 5 based upon reputation. We have heard from multiple X players at camp that expectations are low this year. Last year really broke the pattern of predictability in KY football, especially 6A.
