"They are #1 until someone beats them"

Featured Replies

In the Top 5 6A thread, there are many folks putting X in the top 5 based upon reputation. We have heard from multiple X players at camp that expectations are low this year. Last year really broke the pattern of predictability in KY football, especially 6A.

Reputation has a lot to do with preseason rankings. X has been a top 5 team every year since who knows when, including last season's end of the year rankings. Where would you rank X in a 2014 preseason 6A poll?

I think BG is #1 for 5A right now but they lost so much last year I don't know how long their winning streak will continue.

The big 3 players they last last year accounted for so many TD's the last 2 years, I just don't know if they can make up for that.

As far as this topic goes, I never think a team should automatically be #1 if they won the year before until someone beats them only because in High School Football there is so much turnover when teams lose a lot of seniors etc.

Teams can be worlds apart from what they were just a year prior.

Once again, the top team may have lost much but what do you do when a team has proven year in year out that they can lose a ton of talent and come back and win? Unless you are close to another very strong team and know what they have returning you're going to stick with that championship team and give them the benefit. It's only natural as most of us know only a very few teams well enough to know when they are strong enough to knock off a perennial champion.

The key to continued success with any team is how many O-line and D-line starters are returning and are ready to go. The 2nd consideration is are the new guys in the line teachable. If the lines are at least teachable, then you have a good chance for a successful year. A guy can run a 3.4 40 and eat a lot of turf if no one is blocking.

Other things: senior leadership; work ethic; spirit of fun.

One area where I think a lot of high school coaches flop is not balancing their attack or at least being unpredictable. If it's a matter of not having a downfield passer, think Bill Walsh.

Actually not true. We made a mistake one year and started X 7th I believe.

They probably were 7th by X standards, the problem was 2 through 6 weren't up to standard.

It works in the case of dominant programs for the most part...it doesn't work in the case of new champions.

Every year there are teams that make a run to the finals that were not really expected, but they need to back that up a few times to begin to get the benefit of the doubt to begin the season.

True statement for professional teams and big time college teams but not so much in HS. HS is too driven by the particular skills of one or two guys.

Everything that could change a rating from last year is pure speculation and opinion. Growth ?? more experience ? what is proven is that the number one team from last year was proven number one and UNTIL they are PROVEN unworthy, not from opinion, not from he said/she said.
