Should Warren Central ever lose to Highlands?

Not really a "Yes" or "no" question. In this context, it is coach speak. But, the premise is valid. Warren Central should beat virtually everyone. Just like Dunbar and Henderson should be among the elite teams in the state. In fact, it could be argued that all the large county schools should be world beaters. Now, this argument is based on population and school size, in reality the larger school does not always win and the justification for my argument that numbers don't matter as much quality of program. Again, it comes down to the importance placed upon the program.

"Should Warren Central ever lose to Highlands?" Yes, and no.

Yes. Highlands has a great football program. Coach Feggins will do a super job at Central, but the Birds can play football consistently at a very high level.

The importance of football in a community has a much greater bearing on football success than the size of the school. Fort Thomas loves football and has for a long, long time.

Steele Harmon was an assistant at Highlands for Homer Rice. He shared these stories with me.....

1- an all state player that wanted Steele to stay with him after practice everyday to make sure he was improving- an almost unbelievable sense of urgency for a HS kid.

2-A player who was late for practice because he had to ride his bike to practice after visiting his grandmother in hospital. The kid insisted on making up the drills, doing all the extra running, etc.

3-The players on the team going to a teammate, and telling that teammate that if he missed one more weight workout, THE PLAYERS were going to kick him off the team.

It was rolling when Homer Rice was there. The players and coaches since that time, including Brian Weinrich in both roles, have just thrown gasoline on the fire.

Certainly Highlands can be beat and Warren Central is one of the teams that could do it. But the answer to the question is yes.

Large county schools should be world beaters is a myth. It's not about your schools numbers as much as it is about the total potential pool your schools numbers come from. Henderson had 1000 boys from a potential pool of 1000 boys. I'd rather have 500 boys to field a team from that came from a potential pool of 5000 boys.

Ummm maybe...... but there are a lot of other factors involved. Highlands is certainly a great draw for a student who wants to play quality football, but it is not the only school in the area that has done well. How many other schools have as many schools that have won a State Championship within 15 miles of them as Highlands does?

How in the world do you know this?

Frankly, I think Warren Central has taken a shot in the dark on a guy that has no high school coaching experience and is just hoping it works out. They were enamored with him because he has been a "college coach". If this shot in the dark fails, it will set Warren Central Football back 5 years.

Feggins said that about Highlands because his son played at Highlands and that is the only team in KY he's familiar with. He's never coached a day in his life in the state of KY, much less south central Ky. He probably had no clue when he said it that there is a team 2 miles away from where his press conference was held that's won 44 straight. That's the team he needs to be focused on, not Highlands.

I agree completely and have said as much many times on here, normally getting hammered for it. The "numbers game" is a myth, that is why smaller, in enrollment, schools beat larger schools virtually every week of the season. It's about the focus on the sport at the school, not the size of the enrollment.

I guess I don't KNOW it, but I do believe he will do a great job there. I base that opinion on my interactions with him, his background, and his son. I also base it on some of the comments he made to me in regards to running a football program. I was real impressed. Very personable/approachable.

When I took the job at Mason in 1996, I said our goal from day 1 was to win a state title. One of my coaches later told me when I said that he thought I was full of crap.

I wish I could say that it has happened. But, I do think we are much better than most people thought we could be that were around when I said it. At the time, alot of people did think I was crazy for saying it. Now...some people think we should have won a state title, it's my fault, we have not, etc. In some ways, that in and of itself is a victory.

Bottom line....I think it is good for a coach to have a big/ambitious vision when he takes over a program. Some coaches are more open about it than others.

I would bet if most coaches verbalized 100% of their dreams/goals for their program at their introductory press conference, the general public would think they are nuts and have lost their mind.

on a side note I'm really doing that...we just got a movie style popcorn popper today!

Lol at WC being a large county school. There's under 1000 kids there! It's the 4th biggest HS in Warren County, only Warren East has a smaller student population.

Needed something to do since you don't have to "rah rah" about school choice any longer?

Even that became boring.

Ask St. X how their season went with first year (college experienced) coach.

Like Dragonfire and a few others, I try to remain objective as possible but I must be missing something from this thread.

I do understand that BG lost a lot (a whole lot) of their weapons and Dragons are chomping at the bit this year to try to dethrone them. WCHS is only concerned with district play and crosstown rival. Although their new coach mentioned Highlands (he will regret that), their blood, sweat and tears are focused on Purple and Gold.

And, that is still your goal today, and it should be. I think every coach worth his salt should say, when asked what his goals are, "to win a State Title". That has to be your goal no matter what your situation.

But, of course, you have to have other goals, and prioritize those goals while taking steps for the goal of winning a State Title. My favorite Kentucky High School quote is still: after concluding game 10 of a 0-10 season a reporter asked West Carter Coach, Coach Brown what he would have liked to see during the season that he wasn't able to accomplish, and his response was "Well, to be honest, I have to say I would have liked to win a game".
