Teachers take huge advantage of the system

Featured Replies

I get your point, but if the company or school in this case, offers these days off, why should there be any anxest against those that use them, regardless of what they use them for?

We have to sign an affidavit stating that the day we are taking is for personal illness or illness or death of a family member. These aren't just supposed to be "days off."

We do have two "personal" days which can be taken for any reason. I took one of these for the funeral that I mentioned in my previous post.

I think the article sated these were absences outside of sick or personal days . Which is even worse .

You should read the article again.

It is abuse because she has a fiance that could have helped out and taken the future FIL to some of his visits.

Seriously, that is what leave and FMLA in addition to that is for. Stuff happens and sometimes people have bad things happen to them. However, there are people that seem to have bad stuff happen every year of their life, and some of them are probably: either making a lot of bad choices; unlucky; or abusing the system.

I would but im not allowed Hippa rules and all you know. Plus she is power of attorney over him.

It makes me sick when people trash teachers. The actions of a few are viewed as the whole for the norm.

Some act like it is an easy job or teachers are lazy. No wonder many students misbehave at school. They are taught to disrespect their educators by the public.

Yes there are poor teachers. But there are poor pipe fitters, policemen, doctors, soldiers, etc. happens in every profession.

So we are mad that teachers are rewarded sick days and use them??? I am confused???

As one who very seldom misses, and 90+% of those days missed the last few years have been due to either the birth of my kids, grandparents who have passed, state football finals and the Friday of the Sweet 16....I've always thought the same thing.

It's like those against Cal and his one and done philosophy. And, as corny/old school as this might sound...what's the ole' saying, "Don't hate the player, hate the game."

This.

End of discussion. Next thread.

Even here.

I'll throw out one example that sort of made me miffed. My frosh son had a final in one of his classes and the "big review day" the teacher wasn't there. I'm all for teachers taking full advantage of days off within the structure of their contract. And if the teacher is sick, I'd never begrudge someone for that. But on the review day, I happened to be off that day as well, and there's his teacher sitting across the aisle from us at lunch, yucking it up, not sick at all. Now I say that to say this, take the day before off. Take the day after off. But he came home after the test and said that the teacher not being there for the review and a sub in her place made a couple of the questions impossible to get right because they were covered (or uncovered in this case) in the review. As a parent that ticks me off. That's unacceptable.

^^Agreed. At the very least, even if it was a personal day (most school districts grant 2-3 of these a year), they should have at least backed the test up another day.

And frankly, I think that the "educators are taught to disrespected by the public" statement is a pretty broad brush. That's no different than defending teachers from the blanket statement that they're lazy. Kids will be kids, that's an age old truth when it comes to respect for any authority. And most of the parents I know teach absolute respect for their child's teachers. Are there bad apples in the parent pool? Well I'd venture a guess the bad parent pool and bad teacher pool is close to equally supplied.

Their intent is used well by most. What I tried to get teachers to realize is that your unused days become a payout at the end. In most districts that is 30%. Do the math. If you have 200 sick days when you retire and are making $50,000, you get get a check for 16K+ the day you retire and that 16K+ is added to your last year of pay to make your last year's salary $66,000 for retirement in your 3-5 year average. That adds up on a monthly basis over the rest of your life. It just makes no sense to use them unless you need them.

They are a safety net in case of sickness, they should only be used for the purpose intended.

Wow. I didn't realize this. Awesome perk for teachers. I agree teachers not taking advantage of this seem kind of silly.
