Splitting hairs trying to stick up for your guy. None of those are specifically directed at pitcher, more toward batter. Cmon, I assume you are a male. Calling you a girl as a teenager was fightin words. Ethan is a competitor and will figure it out, has to stop letting it get him. I will say, if the three or four kids doing all the yapping ever get a chance to hit off him, my advice would be dont dig in. Pretty gutless when you know there is no chance of that happening, so no recourse for acting like a 3 year old.

 

Let me be clear because some are missing the point.

 

I truly do not care about bench jockeying. I get why it bothers some. I know one kid on CCH's team so it's not like I'm so close that I can't see the forest for the trees.

 

I just don't see a competitor like Stringer being rattled by "she" comments. That's hardly a "rattling" comment. I think that angle is being overplayed.

 

The fair question to debate is the role of the head coach and how far he lets it go. That's the only debate so far I see as worthy of discussion. The rest comes across as the losing team looking to get back at the winning team which I have no interest in.

 

P.S. No one has had more PMs directed their way when criticizing Krumps than me so "my guy" is overstated.

...if I had a dollar for every time I heard a student, parent, player, little brother, older sister, or grandparent from another program make a "soap on a rope" or "fish-eater" comment about Cov Cath. I think I could "lose what respect I had" for just about every single high school program in Kentucky, and second I could lose respect for all of their coaches and parents for "looking as immature as the boys". Instead, I choose not to let it bother me. I decided a long time ago when I looked up at a student section from an opposing school and saw dozens of students wearing actual bars of soap hanging by ropes around their necks that, 'You know what, there's no way that all of these people think that we are ACTUALLY all homosexuals just because we attend an all-boys school. They're just trying to get into our heads.'

 

The number of times I heard my friends say, "Hit the ball, Sally!" to one another when one or another of us whiffed at bat playing sandlot baseball. The number of times I've been told that "my panties were in a wad" by another guy when I get uptight about something.

 

Get some thicker skin, folks. Yeah, maybe their comments were a little off-color. Maybe they should have chosen something else to say when they were working on rattling the opposing pitcher. These were the youngsters, though; the "scrubs sitting on buckets". They'll grow up.

Also, I certainly was not alleging that anyone from Beechwood brought soap on a rope last night. My point was that things like this are nothing new. They're just meant to try to get into the opposing team's head and get their dander up when they're supposed to be concentrating on the game. Nothing new. I survived it, thousands of other students have survived it. I have no ill-will over it.

No real opinion here but I do find it odd that what is allowed by the officials in one sport are not ok in another. No bench player in basketball would get away with yelling at a kid shooting a free throw. Why is it ok in baseball? Are there actual rules that govern bench activities in baseball?

We have the same opinion on this. I do not think CCH won because of the noise. Both teams are loaded with talent. The Regional tourney is going to be great. My biggest worry is Beechwood drawing Conner. They seem to have what it takes to shutdown The Tiger Offense.

Because kids were getting into the game it means they were taunting Stringer? Do we want the bench players to sit on the bench with their hands politely folded in their laps?

I will add my 2 cents here. I wasn't at the game, but have been at many games over the years where I know exactly what she is saying.

 

There is a rule that players can not verbally root against an opponent and taunt etc. during a game. The players on the bench however may root for their teammates etc. That line is crossed a lot. Over the years I have seen a school in particular get away with this type of behavior much too often (and it isn't one that played in this particular game). When they were batting their players on the bench would be silent until right before the pitcher pitched the ball and they would let out a loud scream or shriek etc. They wouldn't say a chant or words, just scream to try and affect the pitchers release etc. They would do the same when the opponents were batting and would taunt the batter etc.

 

I won't mention the team that is notorious for this type of action but anyone who has played them has had to deal with it and it does come across as not only childish but very bush league.

 

with all that said, I wasn't there at this particular game so I can not say whether that type of thing went on or not.

Beechwood fan here. Watched game last night from near CovCath bench and behind home plate. Four points:

1. CovCath bench was noisy and spirited at key points of the game (i.e., 3rd, 6th and 7th). Beechwood bench only sporadically into it. What was said was probably not of consequence. None of Beechwood players or fans in stands seemed bothered. It was just a high-pressure game involving two tough rivals.

2. Stringer could not make good pitches when he needed to, although defense didn't help. That was difference in the game.

3. Coach Krump was given great leeway by umps with extended visits to mound and conferences with umps. Beechwood coaches largely stayed in dugout. Probably helped disrupt flow of game.

4. Neither team played particularly well. CovCath runner who tried to score on passed ball in 6th could have cost his team the game if Beechwood had scored in 7th. Dropped foul fly balls were critical.

Bottom line, the behavior was bush league IMO, but the only way to stop that behavior is to block out the noise and perform. Both teams are very good, wish them both the best in regionals, and last, but not least, Stringer will be fine, one bad outing doesn't define the kid, he's a gamer and will be ready next time Mullins hands him the ball.
