April 30, 201412 yr Author I think that's a pretty fair assessment. What he did in the past is far worse than anything he said on that recording. Like it or not the NBA is/was worried about protecting it's imagine and brand more than they were worried about who felt discriminated against IMO. Along the way they got rid of that scumbag so it's a win win. I do not have a problem with the decision or the motivation. I get it. It's what they should do.
April 30, 201412 yr What if a player/owner/coach beats the crap out of a female--be it his wife, girlfriend or whatever? Is that as bad as what Sterling has done? Morally yes, will it have a negative effect on the league like this? Not even close.
April 30, 201412 yr Author What if a player/owner/coach beats the crap out of a female--be it his wife, girlfriend or whatever? Is that as bad as what Sterling has done? I thought the exact same thing yesterday. isn't that worse than the ugly words he uttered that led to Sterling's removal?
April 30, 201412 yr This is why I asked my first question. I do not think they would have taken this step had it not been Sterling which only backs up my previous comment about their show they put on yesterday. In all fairness, his previous offenses were under different leadership. It could be that the new leadership really does believe that.
April 30, 201412 yr What if the roles were reversed. It being a black owner saying he doesn't want white people in his arena? I honestly don't think there would have been as big a deal made, in part, because it's the NBA which has a small percentage of NBA players but it's difficult to say. Not to threadjack, but that's one of the most disturbing avatars I've seen in a month of Sundays.
April 30, 201412 yr What if MJ had told someone he didnt want white people at his games? Then it would be pretty far out of character for MJ. Truth be told, I'm almost shocked he said anything about this situation. I half-expected MJ's statement to be something to the effect of "Well, racists buy shoes too."... not really, but it's exaggeration to make a point about Jordan. I really and truly believe the ban was the result of Sterling's legacy of stuff like this, not just for the things caught on that recording.
April 30, 201412 yr What if a player/owner/coach beats the crap out of a female--be it his wife, girlfriend or whatever? Is that as bad as what Sterling has done? Knowing how the world of professional sports works, that owner would get a slap on the wrist compared to what happened in this situation.
April 30, 201412 yr isn't that worse than the ugly words he uttered that led to Sterling's removal? It is most definitely worse. FYI, I am in full agreement with the decision made with Sterling, but I wonder if people would feel the same way about physical abuse against a female.
April 30, 201412 yr What if the owner who said "do not bring blacks....." was not Donald Sterling? Would they have meted out the same punishment? What if instead of "blacks" it was "gays" or "Asians?" Same punishment? Question 1-I hope not and do not think so. Question 2-no.
April 30, 201412 yr What if a player/owner/coach beats the crap out of a female--be it his wife, girlfriend or whatever? Is that as bad as what Sterling has done? I think it's worse. Sterling didn't hurt anybody except maybe their feelings.

And wish if that were the case that Silver would have said so, instead of trying to have us believe that the punishment was simply based on the recent event.
April 30, 201412 yr I think it's worse. Sterling didn't hurt anybody except maybe their feelings. I understand what you're saying but he could have damaged the league tremendously if it had been left unchecked. That's what is really behind the punishment, and rightly so.
April 30, 201412 yr I think it's worse. Sterling didn't hurt anybody except maybe their feelings. In this most recent incident, he didn't. In his past of unfair housing practices, however, he had the ability to make life miserable for thousands of people.
April 30, 201412 yr FWIW Whites and more specifically non-hispanic whites are a minority in LA So in essence it was a minority making a statement about another minority as far as that city is concerned
April 30, 201412 yr In this most recent incident, he didn't. In his past of unfair housing practices, however, he had the ability to make life miserable for thousands of people. Yep, that's what he needs to be punished for.
