The only person who can answer your questions are Adam Silver. As UKMF said, the NBA is about 80% black. Also keep in mind that had Silver not responded the way he did there wouldn't have been any games played last night. As a high ranking member of a union who regularly fights for employees whether they deserve it or not there is a whole lot of truth in the phrase "every situation is different". It's impossible and not logical to compare this situation to any other situation and say what if.

It's not a comfortable discussion or even a logical or sensible discussion but it isn't racist IMO.

April 30, 201412 yr Then it would be pretty far out of character for MJ. Truth be told, I'm almost shocked he said anything about this situation. I half-expected MJ's statement to be something to the effect of "Well, racists buy shoes too."... not really, but it's exaggeration to make a point about Jordan. I really and truly believe the ban was the result of Sterling's legacy of stuff like this, not just for the things caught on that recording. I agree. And wish if that were the case that Silver would have said so, instead of trying to have us believe that the punishment was simply based on the recent event. This is just a total guess on my part, but here's how I could see how things played out... 1.) For Silver to admit that what Sterling did in the past was wrong, and worthy of punishment, is to also admit that the league and David Stern were also at fault for not correcting it when it first occurred. I seriously doubt Silver wanted to do that to Stern. It's like letting someone steal...then steal again...then steal some more...all the while, knowing about it and doing nothing about it. But, when they steal the fourth time, only then do you drop the hammer, and say stealing is wrong? 2.) If you feel you can absolutely, 100% legally win with focusing solely on the current situation with the NBA Constitution...why perhaps muddy the waters with other "evidence" that may be more suspect, and possibly allow for the defense to win on perhaps a technicality? I'm sure Sterling's lawyers would love to put the NBA officials (Stern/Silver) on the stand, and ask them why, if things were so wrong on some of these issues in the past, weren't they addressed back then. It's just my opinion...but, either one, if not both, of these two scenarios could be why Silver stated the punishment was for this instance, and this instance alone.
May 1, 201412 yr This discussion, although I understand why is a discussion, really has no comparison in the NBA. No owner hS been in the league as long and has his history. Other owners probably don't think this way, but if they did something this outrageous to devalue the brand significantly, then yes I think you would get the same punishment. Although the statements were awful, this decision was about the brand.
