As I've said 1,000 times on here I am against the DP simply because we have a history of putting people in prison who are not guilty.

 

I don't get the thinking of those who say "yeah that's unfortunate but....we still need to kill people."

 

I am hoping that some of the methods being suggested for killing in this forum are just frustration and disgust and not truly what you would do if you were in charge. By doing some of these things suggested we as a society would become no better than the person we are torturing.

It is very shortsighted to argue the usefulness of a law or punishment based on the deterrent.

I think you make an interesting point that applies not just to crime, but to any behavior that is immoral, unethical, racist, criminal, sinful, or whatever you want to call it. People in these situations tend to think only about themselves in the moment and not about potential consequences to themselves or others.

It will never be a deterrent, because every criminal thinks they are going to get away with it. Someone who is truly guilty, by confession, should be put to death. If you think a murderer should be able to live, I feel sorry for you.

I'm still against the death penalty, but thinking about it, the only way I can really think of establishing a 100% reliable "truly guilty" murderer is to have video footage of the murder.

Yep. No other way to know if someone is truly guilty.

 

Don't forget the mentally unstable perps who confess to crimes they didn't commit because of their mental illness.

I with you. The "hang em high" or thought that goes into creating the most unusual, cruelest, most painful death is kind of frightening. I get that some of these people did some incredibly disgusting, vicious acts. However, returning the favor as a form of punishment just seems macabre. How a cruel form of punishment could fix or make the situation better just makes zero sense. It doesn't change what was done. Putting someone to death is such a hypocritical way to punish someone. You hear so often that violence or revenge isn't the answer, so why is it acceptable in these situations?? The Death Penalty is a manifestation of anger and rage, two emotions that are rarely productive.

For me, there's no way to know what that person's life will be like or what he may be capable of... even if he spends the rest of his life in prison.

I struggle with the circumstances. There are crimes so horrible that I would have no problem with their being executed. I know that I should value all life the same but when kids or the very vulnerable are involved it just affects me greater.
