April 24, 201412 yr It's 100% conjecture on my part, but based on my plain old visual observation of the area surrounding the intersection and my relatively basic knowledge of civil engineering...those water lines in the area aren't new, by any stretch. Old, uneven curbs and sidewalks and lots of mature trees around the intersection mean that the work on the road (and the water and sewer lines beneath the road) has been minimal at best. A water main sized to put out that kind of water flow is going to require a large project for replacement - the kind of large project that includes tearing out the old curbs, replacing old sidewalks with new ones, and removing most of the trees in the area. You are 100% correct in your conjecture.
April 24, 201412 yr Author I'm betting the Derby Festival planners are LOVING the idea of Eastern Parkway being closed for Derby. I'd bet it's fixed by then... Although it would take 24 hours non-stop work to get it done.

April 24, 201412 yr Happened by my house a few weeks ago. About a stop sign sized hole in a water main a block behind my house. Very odd to see happen. Looked like about 50-60 feet of water shooting up into the air until they fixed it. Took about 40 minutes to get through to the water company too. Oddly enough it didn't affect my water at all. Talk about lucky.

And the fact that it was under a major intersection like that probably would delay a possible fix even more.
April 24, 201412 yr I live about one mile from the break and go through that intersection on my way to work. If I were a betting person, I'd wager it will take nowhere near a week to completely fix this problem. Remember, Derby is upon us and both McConnell and Yarmuth live in the area.

April 25, 201412 yr This will continue to be a major problem across the country. Continually we rate poorly in enhancing our infrastructure and it should be of a major concern to us all. But since the bulk of it is out of public site, it gets no attention.
