April 23, 201412 yr Let me rephrase the previous question. Do the police charge the guy who called you a name? I just don't see how you suspend a player just for yelling at an opposing player. Bad analogy. MLB has never used the same rules as the legal system.
April 23, 201412 yr Bad analogy. MLB has never used the same rules as the legal system. How many times has MLB suspended a player for saying something to a player? Like you said in an earlier response Cole walked away. No way he should be suspended.
April 23, 201412 yr You're still not getting it when it comes to Gomez. Had that ball gone out, doubt anything would have been said. But if I was his manager, I'd have parked him because had he ran, he may have scored. Instead he posed and cost his team a run. And don't think for a second that Puig wasn't included as part of the Latin players who are being restrained by baseball tradition in that article. So, Puig's actions are overboard, but the others are not? Where is that line then if we are gonna establish new ones? I don't think it's necessarily as conscious as some would think. People hear about Bryce Harper coming through the minors and are probably more likely to readily identify with someone that they share a birth nation with. You hear about Puig and, whether people would readily admit it or not, one of the first things that comes to find is "Cuban defector". Not saying that you think like that(because I know you well enough to lead me to believe that it probably isn't how you think). Not saying anyone else in particular thinks like that. I'm just saying that I can see how, whether some realize it or not, they might have some subconscious bias when comparing the Puig and Harper.
April 23, 201412 yr How many times has MLB suspended a player for saying something to a player? Like you said in an earlier response Cole walked away. No way he should be suspended. I would have set the precedent. No free pass for enflaming the situation and then walking away when Gomez reacts. I would drill Cole if I was a Brewer pitcher. I would then yell "walk away from THAT!"

April 23, 201412 yr If I'm Torre, or whoever dishes out the punishment, I go back to letting the players handle things on the field. Should be just like Hockey.
April 23, 201412 yr I didnt say Gomez was blameless. The fight doesnt start if Cole walks away without running his mouth. He , by definition, instigated the brawl. No one came out of the pen or dugout until Gomez made his move towards Cole, so by definition, I disagree who instigated it.
April 23, 201412 yr No one came out of the pen or dugout until Gomez made his move towards Cole, so by definition, I disagree who instigated it. Fine. We have a different definition of "instigate." By your definition a pitcher intentionally hitting a batter in the head would not be instigating because the dugouts didn't empty until the batter charged the mound. I will admit that I will give NO slack to Cole because of him walking away after running his mouth.
April 23, 201412 yr Don't give up a rocket that a guy pimps and STILL makes it to third for a triple. Crisis averted.

I will admit that I will give NO slack to Cole because of him walking away after running his mouth. And I give no slack for Gomez who probably has been able to buffalo everyone around him all his life because his yell is intimidating. Then showed no testicles and got trucked when the rubber met the road. For the record, I'd try to hit him right in the "M" on the back of his jersey next AB.
April 23, 201412 yr Agreed; plus, he didn't jaw and scream and yell, just gave him the ball back and strolled to first. Probably stole a base 30 seconds later. And that's the way you do it.

OR the trainer, or the first baseman.
April 23, 201412 yr The bold basically explains your stance. You're dismissing the fact that Cole was in the wrong in the first place to ever say anything. Cole saying something to Gomez is no more unsportsmanlike than Gomez flipping a bat and posing. If Gomez had just stood on the base and yelled back at Cole, then I am ok with that. But when he came off the base to go after Cole it goes to a whole other level.

I have no problem if you want to revoke Cole's man card for a while for walking away, but wanting a suspension is just silly IMO.
