Pirates/Brewers Brawl----- Who's at fault?

Featured Replies

Gomez got 3 games. Cole got zero. I think MLB screwed up.

So you're going to suspend players for saying something to another player?

There's no reason the bullpens ever need to clear.

So you're going to suspend players for saying something to another player?

He instigated the brawl.

Baseball is just getting ridiculous with all of their codes/unwritten rules. I don't even know how anyone could keep up with them anymore.

Baseball players in general need to quite being cry babies. So freaking what someone flips a bat. I'd toss the dang 20 foot in the air if I jacked a 95mph fastball 400 foot.

Agree wholeheartedly with both of you.

He instigated the brawl.

No he didn't. Gomez did.

.......

As I shared with Clyde today, one of my favorite Rickey stories (admittedly, one of my favorite players ever and, perhaps, the most underrated): hits a lead off homer and hops / struts towards first. Next time up he gets drilled in the ribs, bends down to pick up the ball, and on his way to first he under hands it back to the pitcher. The ultimate "I'm just better than you" moment.

But Rickey understood why he got drilled. He knew it was coming.

Agreed; plus, he didn't jaw and scream and yell, just gave him the ball back and strolled to first. Probably stole a base 30 seconds later.

No he didn't. Gomez did.

Why do you think Gomez came off of the base after Cole ?

A couple of thoughts: I got no problem with a guy that blasts a ball 400 feet flipping the bat or watching it fly….big deal, no different than hanging a little longer on the rim after a monster dunk or celebrating after a touchdown. I don't believe the pitcher should feel he has a right to drill the guy the next time up….had he not hung one, the guy wouldn't have hit one, simple.

Baseball players are a little more quirky than other professional athletes, they got all kinds of crazy. Most of these guys never do anything in a bench clearing "brawl" other than find a guy their size and hold onto them.

I blame this one on the hitter. He had warning track power and miscalculated the distance…he looked stupid. So the pitcher ran his mouth, big deal….but he left the base and initiated the action. Stay on the base, pop off if you want about what was said and see who makes the next move.

I do think there are teams that like to mix it up: Pirates, Cardinals, Brewers come to mind. I like it, it makes the game interesting, like NASCAR..I admit I watch for the wrecks. Baseball is a long, slow game… a little fisticuffs once in a while makes Sports Center bearable during the long summer months.

He's a hothead. If somebody calls you a name, and you assault somebody who are the police charging?

I didnt say Gomez was blameless. The fight doesnt start if Cole walks away without running his mouth. He , by definition, instigated the brawl.

Who in the world said that? And his manager sat his arse for his antics the other day to first. Not true at all.

I think he means from the media and in general. I'll say that I thought the same thing myself. You see a dude like Harper do it, it's "hard nosed, hustle, cares about his team"... when Puig does it, people hate it.

I'd much rather watch a guy like Puig who cares than someone going through the motions and cashing the checks. That's just me. If everyone acted like Puig, baseball wouldn't be any more boring, and that's from someone who grew up playing it.

Let me rephrase the previous question. Do the police charge the guy who called you a name?

I just don't see how you suspend a player just for yelling at an opposing player.

Why do you think Gomez came off of the base after Cole ?

Because he's as big a baby as Cole?
