Opening the thread was a real bummer.

I take Iverson but I'm with Clizzy that this one is close.

I honestly can't believe so many are taking AI over Isaiah . It is close but I'll take Isaiah . He was the best player on a team that won back to back titles. He had to beat Birds Celtics Magics Lakers and Jordan's Bulls . I never saw AI as a guy who made teammates better but yet an assassin on the offensive end. Plus I don't remember an AI led team beating what I would consider a great team in a playoff series.

Isaiah all day and to me it isn't close. Isaiah was a pure point guard who could score and he made others around him better. Iverson never made anyone better.

Not even considering his titles won compared to AI's when you look at who he had to beat just to get to Magic Johnson.....you nailed it.

I'm not a fan of Isaiah but I can distinguish between my dislike and his skill. I think his reputation among his peers has hurt his reputation with the younger generation because people skip over him a lot. It is almost like the bad boys didn't exisit and this is coming from a Jordan fan. One thing I have learned about Mentsch from this thread and the Dirk thread is he doesn't give a ton of credit to 80s players. He has now taken two great players who probably aren't top 5 in their generation over two top 5 players of the 80s.

Exactly that's why Iverson is better, never had anyone he could make better...carried that team all the way to the finals on his scrawny little back, because the rest of the team stunk!

 

Zeke was the flopping, crying, whining D-Wade of the 80's...plus he had Dumars and the Microwave hitting jumpers at will to take pressure off of him...that Pistons team was pretty solid top to bottom, lot easier for IT than it ever was for AI.

I never realized Thomas was only 32 when he retired. I also didn't realize he played with Mike Woodson while at IU. Those are two names I'm sure New Yorkers could do without.

If you want to go there AI also didn't gave to play anybody in the east to get to the finals . I didn't like Thomas either but I don't think anyone who watched Isaiah play can honestly say they would take AI over Isaiah . If you can we watch basketball different.

Look at his totals. For his career he averaged almost 7 assists a game and 4 rebounds as well. That's quite good considering his size and the assists only further prove the point that he was always more than a scorer in this league. Guy gave 100% every night and never cared to lay out for a rebound or the ball.

 

No one his size has been able to duplicate the success he had during his prime.

Isaiah fits more styles and more teams, so I would take him, but it is darn close!

Not much have I watched him. Too young. I know stats aren't everything but AI takes him in a lot. Now there's no denying he Thomas controlled the ball better but IMO, outside of his assists, that's all he did better.

 

I think when people hear Iverson all they hear is shooter. They haven't looked at his stuff to see he was more than that.
