Yo. Wanna go to Prom?

Featured Replies

In high school (back in the late 70's), I built up the courage and just asked the girls (if I was not already dating them). If I was dating a particular girl, it was just a simple part of a conversation and an assumption that we would be going to prom together. My horror story was when I was asked by a friend, not somebody I was dating, to take an exchange student from Nicaragua who was staying with her to her prom. Cute girl. Looked nice. I said sure, why not? It turns out that she knew no English (why was she even visiting this country?). At the prom she didn't talk to me, nor did she want to dance with me. We rode together in the same car as my friend and her date. We got back to their house. My date said nothing, opened and slammed her door, and ran into the house. I was still in shock in the back seat while the other two were making out in the front seat. I got out of the car on my side and walked about a mile or so home in my tux. Definitely, one of my top 3 most embarrassing moments in high school. Thanks, hoops5, for making me remember this.

Well, I do now since I've been married almost 29 years. :p Back then, however, I did not have the "book" on girls mastered nor was there a Google Translate for the "language of love"! :lol2:

There are creative methods to asking someone to prom? What the heck for?

I can tell you what my method was: get nervous, sweat profusely, fumble through the actual invite and then start silently saying a Hail Mary until she responded.

Truth be told, despite inching in on age 30, this is not fundamentally dissimilar from how it works now...

My day, you had to do it face to face. Never by a note, through a friend or on the payphone (10 cents I might add). Go up to the girl, ask her, hope you get a yes. However if you got a no, NEVER let her see you get disappointed.

Tough to have that much posture at 17!

I don't think I went to any Prom except my senior year and boy did I screw that one up. I planned on just going with a group of friends as we had a baseball game in the afternoon and I didn't want to deal with the date thing while trying to rush to get ready.

Well about a week before the dance, I was at home in bed and received a phone call from a female friend of mine. In the middle of conversation she asked if I would go to Prom with her. I froze and felt terrible saying no since she was a decent friend (and co-worker), so naturally I said yes. Big mistake.

For the next week I was hounded with the typical prom questions (color, dinner, ride, etc...) all while trying to juggle school, work and baseball. Prom day comes and I ignore my phone as I was getting ready for my game and by the time the game ended, I had an ungodly amount of missed messages/calls from her. I was over it at that point. I text her back and told her I didn't think I would get ready in time to go to dinner (which was a lie as I was meeting my friends at Montgomery Inn) and it would be best if we met at Receptions. So I go out to dinner and ride with my friends to Receptions. Wouldn't you know my luck. As I am getting out of the car, my "date" and her friends pull into the spot right next to us. That was awkward. I didn't enjoy the night at all after that as mean as it sounds.

Pestering me will cause me to shut down as she learned.

Didn't really think about it. Just the way we handled it. We kind of had our A-list and B-list. I know that sounds rather conceited but that's how it was.

I didn't "ask" anyone to go to prom...I got beaten into submission.

Same here pretty much, I never enjoyed Proms, Homecomings, things of that nature. Now afterwards I enjoyed but the actual buy a tux, dress up, take pictures, and all that I couldn't stand. I mean I would always think there are so many more things I wish I was doing right now! Some of the girls always told me I would look back on it later and regret not enjoying every bit of it but after ten years I don't miss prom a bit. I went through three or four of them that was bad enough for me.

I would have never went to a homecoming dance but my senior year I won homecoming king so I kind of had to go after that. I didn't plan to go so of course I didn't even have a date, then Friday night after the football game I ended up with a pretty awesome date so it all worked out. We had a pretty fun time, but I hadn't planned on going I just kind go had to.

I know one thing the time I went with just a girl that was a friend was way more enjoyable then all the times I went to prom with a girlfriend.

A week before prom my Junior year, I still did not have a date and had no one in mind to ask. A friend suggested a specific freshman girl that I kinda knew but I knew her brother and sisters. I thought maybe. While the idea was percolating in my mind, we had a tornado drill at school. I went to the designated tornado safety zone, and she just happened to be standing there. So I asked her.

The next day, she said yes, and off we went. Neither of us had a particularly good time, but I applaud her for taking the leap. Wish you could have had more fun, Ma'am.

I didnt go to any of my proms, we always had baseball games those days.

Confidence, my brother... It's half the battle.

I was at a game in February and saw where some of the student section at that game Had their chest painted. One boy walked up to a cheerleader and told her he wanted to ask her something, then had 5 of his buddies with P-R-O-M-? painted on their back.

Now, in my day that was a bit over the top, but....

I didnt go to any of my proms, we always had baseball games those days.

Our proms were late evening/night. We rarely ever had a night game. I do remember being late once picking up my date. I took my tux with me and changed after the game.
