March 22, 201412 yr I have a teenage boy who will turn 16 this summer. Of course he is looking forward to only one thing about that milestone, driving. Been there. I've been hearing some horror stories about how much of an increase we can expect in our auto insurance rates when he gets his license. Some have mentioned as much as $400 a month increase  If you are a parent of a teenager who recently started driving, please tell me how much did your auto insurance rates increase?
March 22, 201412 yr Mine went up about $1200 per year, we carry liability only with a large deductible. $400 per month doesn't sound right at all.
March 22, 201412 yr Author There is a huge difference in insurance rates between Pike County and other counties in central KY. This has me concerned and I am going to do a lot of shopping around.
March 22, 201412 yr I think some of it depends on the insurance company. I have USAA so I get a better group rate, however, rates did go up significantly. I have 3 with soon to be a fourth turning 16 in a couple months. I run a fleet of vehicles and have trouble discerning between insurance and maintenance….I just know it costs a lot of money.:idunno:
March 22, 201412 yr Ours nearly doubled with the addition of the oldest ($150 up to almost $280/month). Don't know how I'm going to afford adding the twins this fall.
March 22, 201412 yr Depends on the insurance company. Some go by the value of each car. Mine went up about a grand or so every kid I added. They drive junkers. Neighbor bought his kid a Timmeron(sp) since his kid was listed as the driver insurance was 3k per year. Spent 6 grand on the car so decided to only do liability. Bad idea. Totaled the car.
March 22, 201412 yr Work with a good independent insurance agent who represents a number of different companies. There is nothing wrong with shopping your renewal on your auto policy. You can also get discounts when combining with your homeowners policy at the same company. On the other hand, at times like this, it may be better to split the policies between companies. The point is that a good agent's job is to run all these numbers for you (including rates with different deductibles) and present you with choices so that you can make a quality decision. Unfortunately, comparing yourself with other BGP members who live all over the state will not help. Companies rate you on your experience, your vehicles/home, your location, and factor in the risk of those who live around you. You would be amazed at all the factors that go into rating a risk.
March 22, 201412 yr Ours went up $75 per month when he was driving a Ford Ranger (non 4X4) went up another $75 per month when he started driving 6cyl Mustang (liability only)...moral don't get any thing for them to drive that even sounds like it might be sporty...get em a truck (not 4x4) or simple car, other wise insurance will eat you up

We haven't ever seen a 400 dollar a month increase. We usually would see somewhere between 100-150 increase a month.

I changed my address and nothing else and my rate went down $1296/year! I was happy dancing like a crazy woman.
March 22, 201412 yr Exactly, now you are less of a risk for a claim according to that company. Happy for you!
March 22, 201412 yr I was never on my parents insurance, I had to get my own when I started driving. Wanna say it was around 200 bucks a month for 2 vehicles back then.

I do not pay for my two sons insurance. However, they are on my policy because that helps them by being with us. I look at the policy dec page, figure out what the premiums are for their cars and for them as drivers, divide the policy level fees equally, and send them bills. if they were on their own policies, they probably could not afford it. This way they get the same coverage, but a little price break.
March 23, 201412 yr With an additional car - over $100 a month. Without an additional car - maybe less than $100. (Father of three boys between 22 and 18)
