Question About Insurance for Parents of Teenagers

Featured Replies

There is a huge difference in insurance rates between Pike County and other counties in central KY. This has me concerned and I am going to do a lot of shopping around.

Why is that it's a no fault state?

In my house, they buy their cars. They pay their insurance. They pay their gas. They pay their maintenance. Many ask me how they afford that. It helps that grandparents give them some money when they turn 16, it also helps that they know these rules from the time they can understand. They "work" - babysit, cut grass, walk dogs- save Some, spend some, tithe some. Been doing it since they were little.

This works for us and keeps the costs off me. They still hAve to be on my policy until 18 but after that, on their own.

Watusi, your increase will also depend on what you insure. My kids drove older cars so I only did liability ie not collision.

Right, and my son will be driving something older too and only carry liability on it. We don't plan on buying him a car right off the bat, but we will help him get one that he can help purchase once he has a job. I want him to have some ownership in whatever he gets, some equity of his own.

I'm not knee jerking to the first tall tale I've heard here either. I have heard too many people complain in this area about the steep increase for there not to be a little fire behind the smoke. One is a coworker who I would trust with anything I own, and she is shopping around heavily right now because of the price jump. Another one is the office manager at a client of mine who is an insurance agent, and she said her son drove a used pickup and her insurance jumped $400 when he was added. And she works at the agency.

I've had my same insurance policy with the same agent for 30 years. When I was 16 I got my own insurance and paid for it. I've kept the same insurance all that time and added home's etc. I have good credit, am low risk, and no claims since 1986, so I am hoping that will help.

"Good Student" discounts and a driving class may help significantly with the premium.

They DO NOT have to be on there, in the state of Ky the owners insurance covers first. Mine are 21 and 20 and they are not on my insurance. Nor do they have their own policy.

Sometime after I posted this thread, a BGP member who is an insurance agent sent me a PM and offered to consult with me about it when the time came. I have forgotten who it was, and of course I don't have that PM anymore.

If you read this, you know who you are, please PM me. :D

I do not pay for my two sons insurance. However, they are on my policy because that helps them by being with us. I look at the policy dec page, figure out what the premiums are for their cars and for them as drivers, divide the policy level fees equally, and send them bills. if they were on their own policies, they probably could not afford it. This way they get the same coverage, but a little price break.

And you are hung with the liability if they screw up and get sued. Hope you have a nice umbrella policy. When I was young, my insurance guy talked me into getting off mom and dads ploicy for that reason. Lower the limits since I didnt won anything.

I tried that with my kids and ended up doing the same thing you did.

Just happened to us this past month. List your Child as Liability on your Cheapest car you own. My Daughter is listed on a 85 AMC Jeep CJ!:thumb: If she is listed she is still covered under any Vehicle you own. This is your Cheapest route. If you don't have anything that Blue Books for under say $2500 then maybe it's time you go buy yourself a Toy. If your rates are going to raise at least get something to keep you somewhat Happy!:thumb:

Since my post about 2.5 years ago, both of my sons have married and are off my policy. My oldest did have an accident on his car while on my policy. He paid the deductible and we moved on.

My policy does not allow that. They all drive all cars according to mine. Tried to remove the kids from my most expensive vehicle and they said since I own it, they have to be covered. I'd shop around but my rates seem to be OK
