Regional Ref Swap

Featured Replies

It doesn't seem like fans are typically very happy with the new refs they get in for region tournament games. Is that just a case of fans always complaining about officiating, or is there an legitimate issue? It seems odd you would swap out your usual officials for the biggest games of the season.

How long has this been going on? Are you for or against Ref Swapping?

Fans are going to complain regardless.

I personally have been pleased with the Lville officials during the 9th region tournament. There are times I feel they let the game get a little too physical, but overall they have been very good IMO.

Nobody likes it. The coaches don't like it, the players don't like it, the AD's don't like and the fans don't like it. I know that these are lose and go home games so that might add to it some, but the games are not about good teams playing each other, they've become about how bad the officiating will determine which team will win.

I think the biggest problem is each region is called different even though is not supposed to be.

It is hard on some teams.

We had a run there in recent years with the 16th Region refs calling the 9th Region Tourney. Did that change? You said that these guys are from Louisville... are they 6th or 7th Region refs?

I wonder how they decide from year to year?

And I feel exactly the opposite. I think the 9th region officials calling the 7th region games I've seen have been horribly inconsistent. One second it looks like blood will flow freely at any second, the next minute if you exhale too strongly you are called for a foul. Either allow a physical game or call tictac touch fouls but be consistent so the players can adjust. I guess I'm spoiled, but after seeing games in several different regions I think the officials from the Louisville area tend to call the best games.

I very much like the regional referee swap. It goes a long way to avoid personal relationships between some coaches and referees affecting the officiating. It also reduces referees making calls based on preconceived ideas about particular players. There is plenty of complaining about the officiating, but there is always a lot of complaining about officiating at this point in the tournament. It does introduce the reality that players have gotten used to a certain type of officiating during the regular season and then must deal with a different type of officiating during the regional tournament, but every team is dealing with that issue. All in all, I think it is a great idea.

I wouldn't want the 9th refs.

2nd region refs are great. I'm jealous of whichever region in WKY got them for regions.

Yes, the 9th region tourney refs are a mix of 6th/7th region refs.

9th region has some of the best the state can offer, but I can see where other fans from different regions would feel the way you do. As good as some of them are, inconsistency is something I noticed at times as well.

9th region has historically been called tighter than most the state so it probably throws other regions off .

Has a lot to do with why the 9th Region teams often struggle at Rupp historically.

I agree 100%. If you played in the 9th and went to other regions you could tell the difference. I enjoyed the loser whistles in other regions .

10th region has the 6th region refs this year and very pleased in the way they have done.
