March 2, 201412 yr Author Shouldn't coaches number one priority be making their players dreams come true? Cal knows what's important and it's getting the players ready for the future not trying to fulfill career accomplishments like most coaches. 17 NBA players in the past 4 years, that's what good he is doing. No, not at all!!! that is just buying into Cal's speak. Who pays his salary? UK, what do they pay him for? To coach the UK basketball team. That should far and away be his #1 priority. If he wants to get p,ayers to the NBA as his #1 priority then he should become an NBA agent and or scout. The job of a college coach is 1. Coach his team and make them the best they can possibly be and compete for titles period. You talking about 17 players in the NBA as if that is what this is all about. Who cares how many are in the NBA. As a UK fan, if I had a choice of 17 NBA players in the past 4 years and 1 NCAA Championship or 2 NBA players and 3 NCAA Championships in the last 4 years, I'd take the 3 Championships in a heart beat and any coach who is getting paid to coach and win championships better also choose the 3 titles too or he's not doing his job. His job is not to get kids to the NBa, his job is to win games.

He has a championship 2 final fours and an elite 8 in 4 years. This years team could go either way. He's getting kids to realize their dreams and actually winning games. When was the last team to win 3 titles in 4 years? It doesn't happen. Your goals are unreasonably high. But it is UK and I agree the expectations should be high. But what your asking for is almost impossible.

I brought these things up long before I read anyone else bringing these things up. Maybe I'm guilty of creating the touts about his priorities though. Again, as I've said I don't want another coach here. I just wish he'd change his priorities. It is not his responsibility or job to get his recruits to the NBA. You think it is his #1 goal, it's not and shouldn't be. His job is not that at all, it is to coach the team and win championships period. Has nothing to do with getting his players to the NBA. That is what I think is very flawed in his priorities and anyone who thinks that is his job. The only way getting p,ayers to the NBA would be his main concern would be if his contract stipulated #1 to get players to the NBA and that is what he's getting paid for. Instead I would bet his contract has incentives instead stipulating he gets bonus for SEC tournament titles won, as well as final 4s and championships won.
March 2, 201412 yr What you are being naive about is what Cal is doing and saying, every other coach is saying. If you think Bill Self is walking in to a living room not pushing the NBA dream then I don't know what to tell you. He is just upfront and vocal about it, has a good track record, and kids like him. His goal may be to get kids to the NBA, but he knows his bread is ultimately buttered by success on the court. It is a sales pitch, not a coaching philosophy. Noel stays healthy last year the NIT never happens and BBN is singing a different tune.
March 2, 201412 yr I've seen more articles questioning Cal and his coaching now than ever before. I think he is fine for now but we all know BBN can be a fickle bunch. "Tubby couldn't recruit and that's why they sucked under Tubby" "Billy G was a womanizing drunk". We are a couple of seasons of not fulfilling expectations from "Cal can recruit but can't coach". People would be naive to believe otherwise. Not much room for failure when you are bringing in "the best recruiting class since the Fab Five". Just saying.
March 2, 201412 yr Cal isn't on thin ice, but its not crazy that fans are upset after the last two years. The "good" part about the last couple of years is that eventually UK won't be nothing but freshmen. BCG left the cupboard bare, so Cal had to bring in a lot of guys and play them immediately. Then after the 2012 year, everybody left, so he was starting from scratch again. Since last year's team wasn't as successful, WCS and Alex came back. Since this year isn't a success, some more guys will be returning. Maybe that means next year's team ends up with several sophmores and some juniors. Then we're back to a more balanced team instead of having 5 freshmen starting.

Believe it or not but this was Cals first time ever starting 5 freshmen in a game.
March 2, 201412 yr No. I just hope Ulis is a real PG. That addition alone would change things dramatically.

How big of a problem was he in your mind when he was holding the National Championship trophy 2 short years ago?
