Only Trinty or Ballard will win the 7th. LexCath, Lafayette and Scott County will fight for the 11th and all 3 could get upset along the way. Nobody in the 7th will beat Ballard or Trinity.

I don't, I think the 11th is. I really think it usually is. That is a murderer's row region. Even though Scott Co., LexCath and Lafayette seem the best this year and have played the best, they could still not make the state with the depth of the region, although I don't think that will happen. Ballard and Trinity are probably the best two teams in the state, but I don't see any one else even staying close to them in the 7th.

Why do people think the 7th is the best region?

 

I rank them first solely because of Ballard & Trinity. There are other regions that have more depth, but having the top two teams in the state speaks volumes for me.

I think there are two distinct ways to rank the regions. Both are different. One way would be to rank how hard it is going to be to win your region... how many top teams beating up on one another to get the dance card punched to go to the Sweet 16. The other way would be to rank the regions based on chalk teams making it to the sweet 16.

Just pointing out that there have been other years when people haven't put the 2nd up there for whatever reason, but when it came tournament time, you never see them getting blown out or embarrassed.

 

Because of the numbers that a lot of their schools have, they won't be 5-7 deep, but I'd put the top 3-4 in the 2nd up against the top 3-4 in almost any other region year in and year out.

 

I'll put it like this: I can't remember the last time I saw a "bad" 2nd Region team. Christian County getting blown out by Male one of the first times they went under Stovall might be the closest thing, but that team wasn't what I'd consider "bad", they just ran into a loaded Male team and in their first trip in awhile.

 

Even if Hopkinsville gets upset, I'm not chomping at the bit to play the team that beat them.

Yes and no.

 

Since redistricting, here's what we have:

 

41st: Frankfort, Franklin County, Western Hills, Woodford County

42nd: Bryan Station, Henry Clay, Sayre, & Scott County

43rd: Dunbar, Lafayette, LCA, Lexington Catholic, & Tates Creek

44th: Berea, Madison Central, Madison Southern, Model

 

No offense to any of the other teams, but most years, I would argue that the 11th is the most draw dependent region in the state. Traditionally, unless Madison Central has been up, the four of the five or so best teams have played in two districts. There's no guarantee that those two districts don't draw each other first round and in opposite brackets, which can produce some odd results (i.e., maybe not always seeing the best team win), especially when semifinal games are played in close proximity.

 

 

Take this year. I'll go chalk with my 11th Region rankings from my notebook this week.

 

41st: W - Franklin County, R - Woodford County

42nd: W - Scott County, R - Bryan Station

43rd: W - Lafayette, R - Lexington Catholic

44th: W - Madison Central, R - Madison Southern

 

Now imagine that the draw comes out:

Round 1, Game 1 - Scott County vs. Madison Southern

Round 1, Game 2 - Lafayette vs. Woodford County

Round 1, Game 3 - Franklin County vs. Bryan Station

Round 1, Game 4 - Madison Central vs. Lexington Catholic

 

 

Now, think of how different it is if some slots are switched and the draw comes out:

Round 1, Game 1 - Scott County vs. Lexington Catholic

Round 1, Game 2 - Madison Central vs. Woodford County

Round 1, Game 3 - Lafayette vs. Madison Southern

Round 1, Game 4 - Franklin County vs. Bryan Station

 

Madison Central has usually been either a regional favorite or somewhere in the 3-5 range, usually leaving four of the top five teams from the 42nd and 43rd, which makes things really dependent on the draw in my view.

Add in familiarity with one another and you could see a team like Henry Clay knock off Scott County early in the tournament and things hit the fan. I don't feel like the 7th has that team that could knock off Ballard or Trinity like the 11th does. If I am Ballard and Trinity I am grateful I am not in the 11th this year.

I agree that no one should beat either Ballard or Trinity. However, I think they're that much better than the rest, including their own region.

I think the 11th is deeper this year. But the 7th usually has 5 teams that are historically top 20ish. Some exceptions every year of course. The 11th has more teams on that second tier. However, if Scott Co. or Lafayette don't win that region, and someone like Bryan Station or HC win, the 11th has a poor shot at big trophy. I think Davis and Company have the best shot, much to Joker's approval, from the 11th to win it all if they make it.

I'd place the 14th behind the 9th.
