Two Cordia Students Sue KHSAA For Eligibility

Featured Replies

You don't actually believe that do you????? It seems as though Cordia wants the best of both worlds: to be like a Prep school, and play in and win state championships, as a way of advertising the program while they are building it. If you want to be a prep school, be a prep school, by taking your lumps against other prep schools. if you want to be a 2 A school in Kentucky then be a 2 A school in Kentucky.

2A? There is no 2A in Ky HS Basketball

So, you don't qualify as a prep school until you get really good and have four or five Division I recruits? That's like saying you don't really qualify as a thief until you can collect $1 million.

In the process of getting really good and bringing in those Division I players, the odds are pretty good, at least to me, that you're breaking the rules along the way.

Not saying you don't qualify, just that it's not as simple as a school like Cordia, who doesn't have a lot of income coming in from tuition fees, etc. to just up and decide they want to be a prep school and to get on the schedule of some of those teams, much less have the finances to travel for the games if they could. Think in terms of economies of scale and scope. It's not viable at all for Cordia to be a legitimate prep school. Maybe they could be at some point, but that's a long way off.

I can think of a few schools in Kentucky, public and private, that the last part of your statement would apply to. Where's their punishment and where's everyone else's outrage against them? That's my point.

Again, Cordia is a team who beat Leslie County by 10 to win the All-A Regional Final in the 14th. This isn't a team stocked full of D1 kids like everyone is acting.

In his junior year, Ortiz began to research schools outside of New York. Through a friend, Ortiz learned about Cordia and its credit-recovery program "where students could catch up on missed or lacking high school credit and improve their grades to improve the likelihood that they graduated on time."

Ortiz visited Cordia twice — once with his mother and then with his father. Raymond Ortiz and his son moved to Hazard in July and rented an apartment near Cordia.

"At no point in time during their visits to Cordia or in their discussions prior to enrolling did Ortiz or his father discuss or request information about the basketball program at Cordia," the suit says. "Ortiz and his father had no contact or discussions with anyone involved with the basketball program at Cordia prior to enrollment."

According to the article they transferred to make up for missed credits to graduate on time. Hoops was never in the discussions. Not sure why it would be an issue now?

That is too funny!!!

Three players starting right now are transfers....the one that left was D1 player....and the two trying now are transfers....let's see....maybe a pattern of transfers coming to Cordia for what....academics??
In addition to ennam's comment about the "facts", the article states that Rhodes and Chapman met and had that conversation after enrollment. There is nothing in this case that says there was any recruiting taking place beforehand.

Maybe I'm missing something. Who cares if basketball was discussed beforehand or not. Transfer rules should still apply when it comes to athletes so they are inelligible this year, sounds good so maybe the 2 kids should move on.

If they have a legitimate change of address they should be eligible though shouldn't they?

I don't know the rules. I'm not sure but I don't think to bring grades up is a legitimate reason is it? I always thought it was allowed if family is transferred due to work.

Maybe they should of lied lol. Just sayin.

From the article...

Exceptions are made for students who move with their families before enrolling in the new school, students whose parent has died or whose parents are divorced, and students ordered to move in child protection cases.

Which is what it sounds like happened in both cases.

One things for sure, Cordia has certainly put themselves on the map over the last few years. I'd safely say that 80 percent of the state that follows sports couldn't have told you what part of the state, or what region Cordia was located in before Rhodes arrived.

Three players starting right now are transfers....the one that left was D1 player....and the two trying now are transfers....let's see....maybe a pattern of transfers coming to Cordia for what....academics??

Schools with dorms typically have more transfers than other schools.

Plenty of other schools in the state have two transfers starting and a "pattern of transfers", as you so eloquently put, coming in. What's the difference with Cordia?

Scott County has Ware, Gilbert and Long. Newport Central Catholic has the Moeves kids. Perry Central has Tobler and Toomer. Shall I keep going with examples of top teams in Kentucky that have two or more transfers playing key roles or would you rather me just leave you to single out Cordia? At least you're giving Lafayette a break by not spouting off nonsense about them, so if you want to go on, go ahead, but just like your bashing of a coach's decision not to play a kid back then, the stuff on Cordia and no one else is just a tired act.

There's a rule that stipulates that you won't be eligible if you would have been ineligible at your previous school. Given that, if your grades were to the point that you wouldn't have played and that's brought to the attention of the committee reviewing your case, then you probably aren't going to get eligible. The spirit of the rule is to dissuade an atmosphere where a kid is disciplined at one school, then moves to another as a way of skirting the discipline.

At the same time, I think that there's a solid argument that the rule can be overbroad and unnecessarily punish too many kids. Some kids are probably failing in school because they have a situation and circumstances that could be remedied and worked around at another school and the kid might be better off there for a number of reasons (i.e., whether it be environment, class size, programs targeted a kids who are at risk for failing, programs that are set up for children with learning disabilities, etc.).

Maybe I'm naive, but I don't really think any kid, having the options laid out in front of them and given the chance to make a rational decision, would think "I want to fail at school". Some may be too apathetic to care for a variety of reasons, sociologic-economics being a primary driver in that, but that doesn't mean that other situations can't at least attempt to put them in a better place (if that is actually the case).

I will say it again.

Many on here say it wasn't recruiting. That is fine.

Many on here have said that the story is correct in that they only transferred so they could get their grades up and get the additional credits they need to graduate on time.

Again, if that is the case then fine.

With that said.

Why are so many upset they can't play basketball? I mean, as I said earlier, if it is a fact they transferred because of academics, then fine, let them get their grades up, they don't need to play basketball. Everyone is happy

The reason that won't fly is everyone with half a brain knows for a fact that the boys didn't transfer for their grades, they transferred for basketball. If they transferred for their grades they would of chosen a much better school than Cordia, not to take anything away from Cordia but I bet you can find much better fits for the kids at schools where they are from to help them out academically a lot more than Cordia.

If you think I'm wrong, please provide a list of students that transferred from Canada or New York etc. to Cordia for the academics before Rhodes ever stepped foot on Cordia's campus.

How would we even be able to access that list? And remember, they had dorms at Cordia before Rhodes got there. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't quite a few who fit your requirements.

I also don't don't think anyone is 'upset' they can't play ball other than them. People such as myself are defending them and saying 'let them play' but it seems to me like more people are upset about Cordia in general than people upset that the boys can't play.

I believe people are upset with Cordia more than the boys who can't play also.

I'd also be interested in how Cordia allows more credits to be given to help kids to graduate on time. Also does anyone know where Cordia ranks state wide in academics? I mean if people are going to Cordia from all around the world for their academics, I'd love to see how far ahead of all the other schools in the state they actually are. I mean they'd have to be one of the best academically right? Last I saw, Beechwood was the only school in the state to win the National Blue Ribbon this year.

I just did a quick search and found this

Best High Schools in Kentucky - KY School Rankings

Cordia ranked 213th in the state. Not a resounding advertisement of academic excellence.

I personally don't think it's fair for the boys not to play only because I'm sure they were told they could play if they went there...although in the article they say it was never brought up, if you believe that I've got some lad to sell you, so it is the school that I am upset with. Everyone knows what they and Rhodes is trying to do there which is a slap in the face of KHSAA so I have no problem with the boys being ineligible, but I also feel for them because I'm sure they didn't know when they decided to move.

But why all of this against Cordia and these students and not against the 100's of other athletes that have transferred in KY. I'll stipulate that they came to play basketball, but kids change school in KY every year to play ball at a school they think would be more beneficial to them. Where is the outrage against the kids and schools that Joker mentioned...it seems to me that the problem everybody has is that it's "Cordia" and who the heck is Cordia to think they can do this. Even though this type of transfer happens at every "Powerhouse" program, public and private in the state every year in all sports.
