January 14, 201412 yr Was last year supposed to be THE YEAR or is the window still open? On one hand: 1. Votto and Bruce and Chapman are fairly young and productive 2. New Manager could be a spark 3. Bullpen is solid 4. Starting 5 pitchers are above average 5. Above average defensively On the other hand: 1. No depth in starting pitching and injuries have happened before 2. Left side of infield is just darn average 3. Let a good leadoff hitter get away along with catcher that handled the pitchers best 4. Pirates and Cardinals ain't getting any worse 5. No bench What say you?
January 14, 201412 yr Votto is gonna be MVP this year. Staff should be a strength again. Pen is over paid in several spots. LF is a black hole. Agree that the left side of the diamond is poo. Hamilton will be key to their production IMO. If he struggles, good luck. Lots of ifs for this team to even have a window. Chapman? Where and when? Any moves before spring training? Can Latos dominate and can Cueto get over vaginitis? Can Ludwick play a whole season and be anywhere near as productive as he was in 2012? Lots of questions.
January 14, 201412 yr I'd be highly surprised if the loss of Handoza hurts one iota. Meso and the new guy had better be productive at the dish because they are a downgrade behind it for sure, but the lack of offense from that position is another chasm.
January 14, 201412 yr Heard a week or two ago they were considering taking a flier on Grady Sizemore….Anything ever come of that? I haven't been paying close attention to baseball lately. As to answer the question, no the Reds window hasn't closed. The "window" for competing in baseball is much wider/longer than in football IMO.
January 15, 201412 yr As to answer the question, no the Reds window hasn't closed. The "window" for competing in baseball is much wider/longer than in football IMO. Agreed. There are teams stacked with talent that flop and teams you wouldn't expect that just happen to click the right way. Even with the way the offseason has gone the Reds are a competitive team. Hopefully the new manager gets them in gear.
January 15, 201412 yr The "window" is directly proportional to one's pitching staff. So your saying they have a chance.
January 15, 201412 yr Good news for the Reds is the pitching staff will win games. As long as a team has a solid rotation and above average bullpen they should make the playoffs. With the O they cant make many mistakes in the field. If they can make the playoffs they should be fairly dangerous again... The window is just gettin to its peak IMO. They still have about 3-4 years to do some business.
January 15, 201412 yr People keep saying the Reds have no depth. They have one of the deepest rotations IMO. Only problem is it's 5 guys. Good news all 5 are pretty good so if one goes down there isn't a huge hole. Bad news is there is 5 quality guys.

January 15, 201412 yr It will be interesting to see what happens with Bronson. The longer this draws out with him being unsigned is good news for the Reds IMO. The longer it goes the closer it gets to the Reds price
January 15, 201412 yr The "window" is directly proportional to one's pitching staff. Totally and completely agree. Window wide open. SF has proven twice the formula of great pitching with a not great offense can win and there will be bats available in July and August. How much better was the Pirates lineup on October 1st last year than it was July 1st?

SF has proven twice the formula of great pitching with a not great offense can win and there will be bats available in July and August. How much better was the Pirates lineup on October 1st last year than it was July 1st? Are you sure about that? Except for San Francisco in 2010 each of the last 5 World Series winners were better than the MLB average in runs scored and on base percentage. Here's how they break down: 2013 Boston: 1st in Runs, 1st in OBP, 14th in ERA 2012 San Francisco: 12th in Runs, 8th in OBP, 7th in ERA 2011 Saint Louis: 5th in Runs, 3rd in OBP, 12th in ERA 2010 San Francisco: 17th in Runs, 20th in OBP, 1st in ERA 2009 New York: 1st in Runs, 1st in OBP, 12th in ERA The 2010 San Francisco team was the only team to win with a below average offense and they led all of MLB in ERA. You've got to have some balance and you have to be able to get on base and score some runs.
January 15, 201412 yr The longer this draws out with him being unsigned is good news for the Reds IMO. The longer it goes the closer it gets to the Reds price I agree, but I think somebody like Baltimore will throw some money at him. And he'll chase it.
