January 11, 201412 yr It's not often a D1 head coach resigns to become and OC. He was making 550K at UAB, so it couldn't possibly be a raise in pay, or could it? About like at the HS level, better to be an assistant at a top program than an HC at a dead end program. Even if he took a pay cut, which if he did, I'm sure it's not much (UK is paying Neal Brown 600K, and knowing Mitch, he isn't going to let UK have the upper hand in anything). Smart move in my opinion. He can move into a better job being the OC at UL than he can the HC at UAB.
January 11, 201412 yr Tyrone Nix - has been at So. Miss and So. Carolina - currently at MTSU Mike Cassidy - done a nice job his last time here. Great guy and coach, right there. Was the DB's coach at WKU. Cassidy has been all over. Played his HS ball at Ft. Campbell.
January 13, 201412 yr Author UL hired UGA's DC. Paying him $1M per annum. Not excited about this hire only because he is a 3-4 guy. Not a big fan of the 3-4 and UL dont have the guys on the roster to be good at 3-4 When UL played a 3 man front this season they didnt play it well. UCF killed UL with a 3 man front.
January 13, 201412 yr UL hired UGA's DC. Paying him $1M per annum. That's a big pay day. I know many in UGA land have been calling for his head. Does he have a big recruiting following? Edited January 13, 201412 yr by bugatti
January 13, 201412 yr That's a pretty big pay day. I know many in UGA land have been calling for his head. Does he have a big recruiting following? I'm in Atlanta tonight and my UGA friends are ecstatic that UL hired him.
January 13, 201412 yr Wow. That is a lot of coin to be paying a DC that some thought was on shaky ground at UGA.
January 13, 201412 yr I'm in Atlanta tonight and my UGA friends are ecstatic that UL hired him.Talked to about 6-7 UGA fans.....it is right down the middle, some love him, some think he's junk.
January 13, 201412 yr I'm in Atlanta tonight and my UGA friends are ecstatic that UL hired him. I know UGA was LOADED last season on defense (2012) but dropped the ball when it counted. They were young this season but statistically it was the worst UGA defense they had since 1999 according to the article I read. Again, he may be a big time recruiter though so I guess you could say it pays in that respect. UL needs to build a consistent high caliber recruiting product to move up with the elites so my guess is Grantham would be a step in the right direction in that respect.

I've yet to run across anyone that is sad to see him go. Their main complaint with him centers around that 2012 defense that had several NFL players on it. They said that his scheme is overly complicated and it causes the players to react instead of attacking. Also, the complexity caused young players to frequently be out of position causing them to get gashed at times. I was trying to give them a hard time about letting UL hire one of their coordinators away and they said that they'd have paid them to take him. But these are some die hard UGA fans that seem to be like a lot of UK basketball fans so I'm not sure how much their poor 2013 season skews their view.

I think that probably has a lot to do with it. Was he the coordinator there when UGA's defense was absolutely outstanding in 2011? They weren't too shabby in 2012 either when they got to the SEC title game. My own feeling over the last several years of college football is that without an overwhelming talent advantage, it's tough for a good college defense to really hold down a good college offense. I think you saw a lot of that this year in the SEC, where there are simply very good players on both sides of the ball.
January 13, 201412 yr How much attention does Bobby give to defense? I can't recall exactly but it seems like most of his prominent players - wherever he's been - have played on offense.

Maybe true, but among the guys that played for him at UofL, he's had at least two defensive players go on to lasting and excellent NFL careers: William Gay and Elvis Dumervil.

I think the big complaint in 2012 was that when it really counted, the defense was horrible. Then again, the same could be said for any season that Richt has coached. Only thing that has saved Richt and company is that they have a good bowl record so the season ends on a high note.
