I don't get the love affair with him. Sure he won a Super Bowl, but he has a .540 career winnin percentage. That's not a great head coach. He's above average but not great. If he was so great he'd be a head coach right now

Last I saw he doesn't want to be a head coach. He wants to be an analyst on MNF. Two different things.

Jon Gruden doesn't belong on college sidelines -- he's a myth

I was trying to find an article to support my argument about Jon. I know it's about his college prospect of coaching but Doyel nails why I don't think he's that great, and why people do.

As you said, that article is talking about college. I'm talking NFL.

In the NFL, I get the fascination. His career record is 95-81. He had success in two cities where the NFL hasn't been all that successful in the past several decades. He won a Super Bowl. If I'm an NFL owner and Jon Gruden is interested in coaching my team, sure, I would take a long look at him.

Of course he'd leave that out, it doesn't support his argument even though it came from the same article he linked....

Yeah he probably wouldn't work out in college, but in the NFL that's a different story.

You also left out the part where he got fired from the NFL, great coaches usually don't get fired. Had a losing record after winning the Super Bowl. And most fascination comes from MNF. It really isn't a big deal to me if you think he's great, just don't act appalled when I say he's above average/medicre

"Hey Jay, please sign Marvin Lewis as your defensive coordinator." ......signed 'The People of Cincinnati'

Sean McVay (he's like 28) is going to be Gruden's OC, and Raheem Morris the DC.

Redskins primary coaches have an average age of 36....Youngest staff in the league?

Also Jon never won a playoff game after winning the Super Bowl. He win with a team built by Dungy, and destroyed it.

Put me in the camp of Bengals fans glad to see Gruden get this job. However, I will say this. I think Gruden may be a guy who will be a better head coach than an offensive coordinator. My only question is can he be tough and be respected, perhaps even feared, by his team. He doesn't strike me as having that tough edge you need as a head coach.

I think you nailed it. I think the biggest question also will be will he have the respect he needs form the players or will he be a push over.

He really hasn't had much NFL coaching experience except for the OC here. He was an assistant coach for his brother, but that isn't much of a leader position.

Curious of how the players will relate to him and if RGIII will continue to walk all over the HC as it appeared he did with Shanahan.

Super Bowl winning coaches who were fired during their careers:

Bill Belichick

Tom Coughlin

Brian Billick

Mike Shanahan

Mike Holmgren (technically, he left the team)

Mike Ditka

I am sure there are more.

OK, over/under on how many years until Gruden gets the ax in Washington is 3

What do you think, over or under?

Shanahan didn't win after Elway retired. He won one playoff game in the 18 seasons he didn't win a Super Bowl, yeah he's not that great either. Bellichek has a .660 winning percentage. I honestly don't know how Tom Coughlin has won 2 Super Bowls.dont really have an explanation for the others

Well, considering the average NFL coaches career is 4 years (based on 2013 numbers), I'd bet the over, just slightly. NFL head coach is one job where at some point, you will most likely get fired, and fired pretty quickly.

I wish he was still in Tampa. Things changed quickly once he was gone. I'll also take above average any day.

It had more to do w/ losing Lynch and Sapp and age catching up to them. He did get a good season out of Brad Johnson though. Look what he did for Rich Gannon. The guy was a great offensive mind.

Coughlin coached the Jags to a couple of AFC Championship games, plus was a great coach at BC, when you consider his resources. The man is legit.
