I've been trying to think of coaches that got to leave on their own terms, and I can't come up with a bunch recently. And for current coaches, I'm not sure how many get to leave on their own terms besides Belichick, Coughlin, maybe Tomlin, maybe Payton. There are a couple more that might be close, but for the most part, they are all operating on borrowed time. Have to admit, the Marvin is really lucky to have survived this long without a single playoff win and basically a .500 record.
January 9, 201412 yr I like the hire. Longtime Redskins fan here... I know Gruden gets the blame for the Bengals, but there are times to look at the glass half empty, then times to look at it half full... No the Bengals haven't won a playoff game the last three years, but getting them there IMO says something. Andy Dalton is an above average NFL QB...not in the first tier obviously, but not in that 2nd tier either. And, all of the Bengals faults for failing in the playoffs aren't his fault, just like they aren't Grudens. Consdiering what was out there, I think this is a great hire. Now if Daniel Snyder will get off his "want to be like Jerry Jones" act and leave Gruden alone to do his thing, that would be nice.
January 9, 201412 yr Jay took over an offense that had to start a rookie QB with no training camp, and one good receiver who was a rookie in Green. The next year they had to start rookies at the #2 receiver. Then this year we have more talent on offense and we became a top 10 offense, and doing this with a QB that is very up and down. The Bengals also got better each year in points scored the Bengals were 18th his first year, 12th his second year, and 6th last year. As I have mentioned in another thread maybe Jay Gruden wasn't as bad as people like to believe. Or maybe at least Andy Dalton is not as bad as people believe. However one of these two were not as bad as we thought. I wish Gruden the best of luck!

Good luck to you Coach Gruden in Washington. However, I place a nice chunk of the responsibility of last weeks loss on you for not honoring or knowing the strengths of the run offense against the Chargers defense.
