Should weather forecasters be held responsible for bad predictions?

Featured Replies

You realize some forecaster has to tell your IPhone what to tell you...right :lol2:

Nope. Siri does that. :D

Pretty simple in my eyes. Better to be over prepared for Mother Nature than under prepared.

You hit the nail on the head. I'd rather get prepared and have nothing happen than not be prepared for something when it happens. The truth is, for the most part, those guys do a decent job, especially considering how quickly the weather can change, and even a degree or two makes a huge difference in what happens. Who exactly is hurt when they call for a few inches of snow and everyone gets prepared (including road crews) and nothing happens??

Why do people by bread and milk? I don't get that. I'm buying peanuts and beer.

And in their case it's ok to be wrong as long as they scare the bejeemies out of people.

Wal Mart and Kroger should help pay their salaries since they are the ones who benefit most from bad predictions.

You do understand that weather changes by the minute, right?

Me. They call off basketball games that otherwise could have been played. Practice is still scheduled and it goes on during the day which means now I have to leave work to pick the kid up and get him to practice causing me to have to work on a Sunday to make up time missed that wouldn't have been missed had they played the damn game if they would have gone to school in the first place. Not a lot pisses me off more than overreaction to a couple of snow flurries. This is why northerners laugh at us.

Nobody. Some people just need a "conspiracy" to complain about.

And my iPhone adjusts properly. Damn forecasters ain't squat.

And the one time they don't do that, and an F5 tornado destroys an unsuspecting town, you all will want their heads for that as well...

You realize I said "over-hyping."

Not true. Nobody can accurately predict a tornado or its strength. Otherwise there wouldn't be casualties from the tornados.

In terms of a severe weather situation (storms, tornadoes), your iPhone is likely 5-10 minutes behind...

Predicting tornadoes is far more effective now than it was even 15 years ago. No, we can't exactly predict those things, but the strength and paths of storms are pretty accurately predicted now days. Many casualties from those storms are from people that simply can't get out of the storm's path.

Well not the peanuts but the Beer, YES!

For years in working in the Hospitality industry I dreaded snow days, as many of the employees didn't come into work and then when running the Welcome Center the Commonwealth seemed to think we should catch snowflakes as they fell from the sky but now, I can just sit at home and watch snow fall and await for the snow plows to clean the roads prior to me driving to work.

I was at Meijer last night and every cart was taken and all lines were 10 deep for what...? People in this region are so soft!

I asked my wife the same thing. I could go without Bread and I hate milk. Beer and peanuts are much better.

Big deal. Like Facebook and twitter hasn't already gone to DefCon Level 5 in these situations.
