Only saw CVH once, but he doesn't play like a freshman.

 

In my watching him play what I like best about him, is his basketball IQ. The kid is smart, far smarter than any freshmen I have seen in years and years. Now I am sure their have been maybe as good even better ball players but his basketball IQ is about as good as I have seen. He just seems to know where everybody is all the time and he understands his role and the game. He doesn't mope when he makes a mistake but you can take it to the bank it will be the last time you see him make that mistake. He is without a doubt as good on the "D" side of the ball (maybe even better) than he is on the "O" side but what I also like about the kid is that he understands he is the Freshmen on the team when it comes time to do the team jobs that the younger underclassmen do (if you have every been on a team you understand what I am saying) and not once have I seen him complain or cry about it and in fact the kid always seems to be smiling.

 

Oh and one more thing, he usually is the last one off the floor in practice! Many a day Coach Fredrick and I will rebound for him and PK as both will shoot, shoot and shoot some more!

And this all means what. Just admit that Ruthsatz wanted to put the running clock on HHS and it took him until the 2 minute mark of the game to do that. Congrats to the coach and he should be able to sleep well tonight. You mentioned VonHandorf started, but he scored late in the fourth on a cherry pick basket that an HHS player could very well have fouled him extremely hard. Then we would have read on here how bush of a play that was by the HHS player. Why risk the injury to one of your starters with the game out of reach? Why was CovCath pressing the entire game?

 

Just admit that you and the CovCath faithful enjoyed the evening as payback for all of the drubbings that the football team has taken over the last what 10 years?

 

Just calling it as I see it. If Dale would have done that in a football game, you would be the first one on here calling him out.

Listen it isn't paying HHS back for the football beatings that HHS has given CovCath, heck it's just that this HHS team and you can add the JV and the Frosh aren't that good! Think of HHS playing Harrison County and Pendleton County in Football at the moment, that is where HHS stands in Basketball compared to CovCath. You might not like the comparison but it's the truth at the moment!

We agree on a few things:

 

I would NOT have had my starters in the 4th quarter. No need. The JV could have handled the situation at that point.

 

I don't KNOW if the running clock was important or not to Scott but I will say this. He could have gotten it a lot earlier had he wanted to. He subbed freely. In addition the best player took 8 shots. It was ugly and could have been A LOT uglier.

 

I would NOT have applied pressure before half court in the 4th quarter. I would have attacked at half court though which would have sufficed. HHS would not have gotten a clean look so you could still have the same result without the full court press.

 

I know for a FACT that Kevin Listerman didn't like it. He was giving the stink eye to the CCH bench a few times late in the game.

 

I'm glad HHS didn't act out in frustration. It would have been wrong had they did so but it would have also been SOMEWHAT understood. I'm not sure if that's good or bad for HHS from a competitor standpoint.

 

As a CCH fan I got ZERO enjoyment out of this game. HHS was so inept that it simply wasn't fun to watch.

Covington Catholic 67, Highlands 29:

The undefeated Colonels (10-0) dominated from start to finish in this contest.

Highlands (1-7) fell to 0-3 in 9th Region play. The Bluebirds have lost four straight to the Colonels. Highlands last beat Covington Catholic, 61-45 on Jan. 5, 2010.

The Bluebirds had problems all game against the Colonels’ man-to-man pressure defense. They turned the ball over 17 times on 15 CovCath steals. CovCath had just seven turnovers on four Bluebird steals.

Highlands put up just 24 shots making 10 for 42 percent and made just 3-of-8 free throws for 38 percent. Drew Houliston led the Bluebirds with seven points.

Ten Colonels scored. Post Mark Schult led the way with 14 points and Nick Ruthsatz added 10 on two three-pointers. Ruthsatz will play college basketball at National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics power University of Findley in northwest Ohio next year.

CovCath also dominated the boards, 32-23. Schult led the way with nine.

Highlands returns home Tuesday against Bracken County (8-5). Game time is 7:30 p.m.

I should be clear. I'm not criticizing Scott for his defensive pressure. As I said he could have sat back at halfcourt and accomplished the same thing so in the end it didn't change the score. I just would have done it differently.

 

As to the "cherry picking" comment: Either a)HHS didn't take advantage of 5 on 4 or b)they didn't get back when they saw someone breaking long. No excuse for either.
