Anybody a Kentucky Colonel?

Featured Replies

Received an odd piece of mail on my desk this morning, from the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. At first I thought it was just a public service announcement or something requesting funds for a charity or the like. Instead, what I found inside was a color brochure/booklet (about 10-12 pages) detailing the history of the Kentucky Colonels. Along with that was a letter (it was addressed to me, specifically, and had my work address on it)...the body of which, read as such:

Dear Colonel,

We have just learned from the Governor's Office of your commission as a Kentucky Colonel. Congratulations! We welcome you to membership in the renowned Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

We will soon prepare your official membership card and other personalized material that will allow you to subtly announce your new status. First though, we want to check that we have your name as you prefer it to be listed. We also would like to confirm your address and ask for your email address. We do not share email addresses (or telephone numbers) with anyone. We do, as possible, use email to contact members in a effort to save money on postage.

The Honorable Order is a non-profit social and charitable organization founded in 1931. Membership is open to all who hold a commission as a Kentucky Colonel. We have no dues structure; however, we do hope you will maintain your membership by remembering our Good Works Program in your charitable giving.

Sincerely,

Colonel Glen Bastin

Senior Ambassador

At the bottom of the letter, it had a place to make any corrections to your name/address, as well as place to put your email and telephone.

Is this really the way the Colonels handle new membership? I don't know whether to be honored that somebody took the time to nominate me...or if I should be truly skeptical as to how legit-looking the scams are getting nowdays.

And what really has me confused is that when I took it down to my boss (thinking that maybe if anyone might have nominated me, it might have been him)...and he says he got the same thing mailed to him! The only difference was, his was sent to his home address.

Anybody got any insight?

I have been a Colonel for some time and I don't remember how I was notified.

The Governor appoints Kentucky Colonel's but you have to be nominated by a current Colonel.

The "Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels" is a separate nonprofit organization, whose membership is made up of those who hold the special commission of Kentucky Colonel.

For the record, Glen Bastin is the current CEO and Senior Ambassador of the organization.

You should probably make a call to check it out.

Thanks 2C! That's the same address and phone number listed on the letter.

Maybe somebody in your company nominated you and your boss at the same time.

My wife and her Father are members.

She paid a few dollars, got a plaque and is now a Kentucky Colonel. Not really sure what it means, never looked into it much.

I made a donation through work one day and became a colonel.

They do hit you up for donations.

I just became a Colonel a few years ago and as I recall that's how I was notified but I did know that a friend of mine had nominated me. You DO NOT have to pay anything to get the wall certificate and it came after my notification letter. I also got some fancy looking business cards. I did send a contribution to the Colonels when I was first comissioned.

FWIW being a member of the Honorable Order is the reason that Harland Sanders referred to himself at Colonel Sanders. I don't think he ever had any actual military rank.

Did some calling, as you suggested. The lady I talked to said she'd try and track down what went on, but she said it looked like the commission appointment had actually been back in October! She said she'd see if she could find out who nominated me, and where they were from.

She just called back with a name, that I didn't recognize. When I told her about my boss getting a similar letter, she checked and said his commission date was the same as mine, and that it was most likely the same person who nominated him.

I started to get mail from them and had no idea why. Two years after I retired, I received info from the school board that they had nominated all retiring teachers. Because I did not send in anything, as I did not know what was going on, they have not sent anything for awhile.

That is awesome!!!!! Congrats!!! I have always wanted to be nominated to be a Ky Colonel ever since I was a little boy and my neighbor was.

I'm so jealous. I know some don't think much about it, but I'm really into history and nostalgia etc and love this state and always looked at that as a great honor.

My grandpa nominated me and got the certificate for me. Unfortunately they spelled my name wrong and I lost the mail they sent to have it fixed. Anyone know if that's something I can still get fixed?
