Can someone/anyone help me understand the whole situation with Brandon Phillips. He appears to have many endearing qualities, fan friendly, produces at the plate and in the field, great smile, seems to love the game, etc. Yet he seems to be the whipping boy for the organization.

 

What am I missing?

All he cares about is Brandon. I don't think he gets along well in the locker room. Production is slipping. Contract is big and still complains about it.

And when you combine that with his comments regarding Castellini, not a good combo.

 

I do think that Brandon Phillips is very good for the organization in regards to getting the average Reds fan excited about the Reds. If they were to trade him, I think you lose a lot of excitement, especially from the younger fans. Kids love Brandon Phillips.

Brandon Phillips defended his comments from the August issue of Cincinnati Magazine that said he thought his six-year, $72.5 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds was a "slap in the face" and that he'd been lied to by general manager Walt Jocketty and owner Bob Castellini.

 

"I have nothing to get off my chest. What did I say wrong? Please tell me, what did I say wrong? I want to know what I said wrong. Please tell me. I want everyone to tell me exactly did I say that was so wrong?" Phillips said.

"I haven't paid attention to what people are saying. When someone wants to do a story about you and they want to ask questions, that's what it's all about. Phillips was asked if he thought like he was lied to by Jocketty and Castellini.

When one person starts being above the team then it's time for them to move on. Chad Johnson is a perfect example. Brandon isn't that bad but he's becoming a distraction.

Here's the thing, baseball is an individual sport. I get the whole distraction thing but how is it selfish to go 3-4? This is also a guy that seldom misses a game due to injury. He hits anywhere they ask him to hit in the order unlike certain players who have to hit 3rd. I'm not necessarily defending Phillips but I don't think he is much different than 90% of all of baseball.

Chad Johnson is to Marvin Lewis as Brandon Phillips was to Dusty Baker. Both players out of control, running their mouth, and detrimental to the team. I doubt a new manager is going to put up with the mouth, Price was on the inside last year and knows if it hurt the team or not (I'm guessing it did). I think if Phillips stays, it will be real interesting to see how Price plays it out. I know what happened after Chad left.......the Bengals got better. It's amazing how the Bengals have gone from one of the NFL's most talked about (dumb, arrested) teams to one of the better organizations. And it's all about leadership on the team.

It's Cincinnati, guys like Ryan Freel are adored and guys with real talent are ran out of town.

Right, because there has been one better 2nd basemen in the Red's history and Morgan just may be the best 2nd basemen of all time, yet a ton of Red's fans don't like Phillips because he's flashy and show boats. That makes me :lol:
