100% no 4th graders on that team. The coachs son(3rd) plays up with the 4th grade and the 3rd. My son(2nd) plays with the 3rd and the 2nd. The kids on that 3rd team are 8 or 9 years old. Everyone gets confused because during the seasonal tourneys their our teams always play up a grade. We actually had our kids bring birth certificates because the previous weekend a team from Louisville complained about us playing up and then playing down in state. I watched the royals game(went to overtime I think, they were bigger--we were a lot quicker). The royals have a great team. Jeff Sheppard has his teams play up a grade level throughout the year and then brings them back to their age group for big tourneys. Best way to do it. After talking with Mrs Sheppard I learned that their son is even playing up a year at his grade level.

But one game I saw, his mom ripped into him from the sideline... and keep in mind, his dad gets into those boys from the bench. She told him, "you better start doing x,y and z, or I'm going to make u sit next to me for the rest of the game, I don't care what your daddy says!"

On another note I cannot believe that the Ky Bulls are not playing D1 at State this weekend. I heard they decided to play D2 which is crazy to me but not surprising! This team has the most talent on it than any other team in NKy, but is poorly coached. Wow!!

Looks like the Bulls may have been suited for D2, while they won the D2 championship they struggled all 4 games on sunday(although I didn't get to watch them, I heard they was some weak officiating in their 2 point win over the Shooters). Congrats on the championship.

With all the injuries the Bulls had, they had no choice but to play D2. The competition in D1 is not that different. The top 2 teams from the D1 tourney are good, but very, very beatable by a healthy Bulls team with all their players there and at 100%.

 

The Bulls played this weekend without 2 starters and with one starter very gimpy with an ankle sprain and yet another starter only 3 weeks removed from a cast on his broken arm. The Bulls have not played one game all season with all their horses present and fully healthy.

 

I have no doubt they are absolutely the best NKY 5th grade team with everyone there... and they are probably the best team in the state as well.

Grade School AAU state tournament at the KBA this weekend. Anyone going?

 

I watched a lot of both the d1 and d2 tournaments the last two weekends. A lot of good teams in both tournaments. In the 5th grade division, I was impressed with teams from Northern Kentucky. All had good talent and very fundamentally sound. Several good big guys on those teams. Who won the team league those teams were in? My son's team (Express) beat Gametime in D1 semifinals but I was impressed with their team and fans. Key Player played in the D1 and I understand they compete on a national level. Having won the HBC tournament for their grade the last two years.

 

Ashland has the best 2nd grade team I saw. They are amazing in that age group.

Welcome to the site WFF. I had the chance of seeing the Ashland 2nd grade team at state and they are truly amazing. It is unbelievable how disciplined their group of 7 and 8 year olds are. They easily won the 2nd grade state tournament with little resistance from anyone. They were fun to see play.

The ashland heat are the best passing team I've seen 2nd grade wise in kentucky. Their Achilles that I saw was a lack of size(we finished runner up and played them 3 times). I'm still trying to figure out how the focus beat them earlier in the year. My sons national team beat the focus 47 to 6 so I know that while they are good they are not very good, lol. I've saw several teams from Indy and Ohio that I think would beat the heat pretty easy(again no size in my opinion) . Nothing against them though, hands down best in ky this year.

They are the most talented but probably the worst coached. If those kids had a decent coach they could be special. JMO

I'm trying to get Brad Redford to coach them. Brad wants to start an AAU program and would like a younger, quality team. Brad would take them to the next level for sure. You always reach a point in AAU where parents should not be coaching. We'll see what happens.

 

If not Brad, then there are a couple of other younger coaches who assist on the high school level who might be interested.
