Yeah most are not ready for that, TooL goes deeper than almost any bad out there, their songs are sooooo complex. Most every song has two meanings, a simple more literal meaning that is usually on a quirky, riske', taboo, or off the wall subject, and then another super deep meaning that is hidden behind the disguise of the simple meaning. A good example is the song "stinkfist", on the surface it seems as if it is a song about just a perverse sexual act, in reality it is meant to represent the notion people do not appreciate to get the significance of life. It's like we need something so intense and in your face just to have a wakeup call and realization we should be happy living life. It takes something to wake us up, I have to feel something to feel something. If that makes sense. Very fascinating band though and super talented musically. Their song arrangements are so complex and technical, they play on many unique time signatures and other technical musical concepts. They are perfectionists when it comes to their art and it shows in the music, and live in person (they have an amazing show). With that said they are way deep into the occult stuff, especially sacred geometry. The drummer Danny Carey is probably the most fascinated as he has many original Crowley books and other things from the black arts. He actually sets his drum kit in a way to where it forms a certain sacred geometry pattern. There's a reason he does it like that to. I may not agree with everything they are into, but boy do they rock!

I feel a lot of people listen to music just to listen to it, hence why there is so much pop/pop country garbage on the airwaves. In fact it's so bad I don't even listen to FM radio anymore, strictly SiriusXM, my ipod, or iTunes radio. Most people only care about a beat they can bob their head to and tap their feet to or catchy hook to sing along with. I feel the true artists can connect with you on an emotional level, make you feel the song to the point its not a song anymore its a musical journey. So you see if you listen to the right bands, the words (along with everything else in the song, riffs, bass, drums, etc.) are everything. That is the point of it, what is this song saying, what does it mean to me. If you've ever "felt" the music and been "in tune" with the music you know what I'm talking about. I'm talking so into it that it gives you chills. I've listened to so much TooL over the last 15 years or so (over half my life) that I've heard all their stuff thousands of times. With that said I can sometimes still get chills in the moment when the right song comes on at the right time. Chills, hair's standing on in. That's when you can tell you are getting something out of the music.

I made the mistake of looking into some tool songs, won't do that again. Yeah maybe but I love that kind of stuff. Not just the lyrics themselves but where they come from. I usually despise that kind of literary criticism, but I really enjoy it with music lyrics. For example, one of my favorite hymns for years has been "Abide With Me". It's a beautiful hymn about placing faith in God and asking him to be at your side in a time of great grief and despair. But only within the last year or so did I learn that that the author of the lyrics wrote them at a time when he lay dying of tuberculosis. He only lived for another couple weeks after finishing the work. For me, it added something profound to the tune beyond even the truth of the words themselves. I enjoy that kind of knowledge with a lot of other music.
November 22, 201312 yr Author You definitely done the wrong thing by getting me started on TooL (because it's going to cause you guys to see/hear more of them than you probably ever could want), but it goes with the thread. I have mentioned a few times my fandom of the band is what lead me on my search for a lot of these sacred geometry/occultic symbols and meanings. Here is a clip from one of their live shows from the same tour I went to last year (not the same show because this video is better). It may not seem like a big deal, but the band rarely tours and has been around since 92' but only has one EP and four LP's to their credit (hopefully will have another one next year), it has been almost eight years since their last album. They have an awesome stage show, their show is about as good as it gets for a live show when you factor in the total package. With that said you can see the occultic influences and symbology in this clip. If you don't want to watch the whole thing it starts at around the 4:15 mark (biggest example being around 4:40)..... As for the song and meaning 46&2, that goes back to the extreme deepness they go into their subject matter. The concept of 46&2 is a Carl Jung theory about consciousness. Human beings are equipped with a 44&2 consciousness, 44 and then the X&Y chromosomes. However, early man and Aborigines people have only 42&2. The concept of the song is in theory only one person in history has lived with a 46&2 consciousness and that is Jesus Christ, it is also known as the Christ consciousness. It is theorized that perhaps after we die we will evolve into this consciousness, or some believe they can reach this level through intensive spiritual enlightenment (perhaps like Buddha). So hence the chorus and theme of the song, step into my shadow, coming out the other side. Turning from your physical self to your spiritual self. I want to know what I've been hiding in my shadows.
