Don't know if this is true or not and have too much homework to catch up on to try to verify it, but a friend of mine in Texas posted on my Facebook that Deion ran a high 4.5… backpedaling.

 

Just the fact that this isn't really something you dismiss as outside the realm of possibility says enough about it to me.

Disagee. Deion was amazing, however the physical ability of some of these receivers are like nothing that he really had to play against. Calvin Johnson is just fast, stronger, and bigger and also plays the ball great in the air. If it was true straight man on man coverage with no help over top I think Calvin would have a field day. Now if Deion played man but had safety help over the top, then I think he would be able to slow Johnson down some. However if it was a true one on one matchup, then I would have to disagree with Jerry.

 

I think under the new very little contact rules of NFL football, Deion is overmatched.

The new rules would have had very little impact on Prime Time. He wasn't physical and didn't need to press at the line to be great. Speed and smarts are still within the rules...

All he needs to do is stay close and get a hand on the ball, Deion could do that with the current rules. Big WR's could kind box him out and had some success against him. I'd love to have seen this matchup. Would also like to have seen Bo Jackson in his prime running down hill at Ray Lewis also!

Would he have shutdown Megatron? No, no one will completely shut him down, but I think he'd have got the best of him more times than not. Deion was on a different level than anyone at the position today and it isn't even close IMO.

Deion no doubt was at a different level, but so are the kind of receivers that they see today. Remember back then Randy Moss was like one of the first true tall, fast, and great at going up and playing the ball in the air back then. Which we saw how he took the league by storm against the DB's back then. Now today most of the elite receivers are 6 foot 4 or 5 fast, big and strong, can jump and play the ball in the air. He didn't see receivers back then like they are today, in today's passing age. He probably would do as good and probably better than the best corners today still against Calvin. However if it was true one on one coverage with no help, he would have a very hard time. Granted his hard time would still be better than what most corners could do lol.

Just think about how they would attack him. Deion played off coverage man a lot, they would throw quick passes passes right to Calvon early and make Deion have to make a tackle. They would throw quick slants, which Deion would have hard time making a play on the ball because Calvon is so big, he would be hard to get around with his body, and then probably him him with a double move. They would force Deion to play tighter, and then Calvin would beat him deep on a jump ball, or the back shoulder throw which is used 10 times more today than it was back then. The development of QB's using that back shoulder throw is a killer, because even if you have great coverage it is basically impossible to stop. In today's NFL a true man to man with no help, is basically impossible to do against elite receivers. If Deion had help over top, then he probably would be fine though and contain him somewhat. However if its true man to man with no help, I think he would have a hard time.

I think Deion Sanders trying to cover Randy Moss is a different conversation.

 

I see Johnson as more of a big, strong possession receiver and Moss as more of a tall, lanky freak athlete. I think Deion would be able to cover Johnson better than he would have been able to cover Moss.

Actually I was old enough and I loved watching him play. I use to imitate his little touchdown trot he use to do when running touchdowns back lol. He was amazing there is no arguing that. However he also never played against receivers like they are built today, especially Johnson. The passing game as a whole has really evolved even more from back then. As I mentioned the development of QB's now intentionally throwing that back shoulder throw has also grown. Deion would close fast on the slants, and short screens. However Johnson is so big, and great at getting position, it would be hard for him to make a play. Then on short screens Johnson could possibly take them to the house because of Deions poor tackling. Throw in how fast Johnson is too, and how he can go up and get the ball. Then even if Deion has perfect coverage, Johnson's ability to adjust and catch the back shoulder is great too.

 

Deion would no doubt do better than probably any corner in the league. However he would need safety help over the top to truly slow down Johnson IMO.
