what does race have anything to do with combining schools to better kids futures?

Not knowing the demographics of Dayton or Bellevue, does their population want to merge with an inner-city school? That is where race comes in. Race will always trump reason and logic

is it really up to the schools though? i always though city and county officials had the voice in whether something like this would happen. im probably wrong but that is just what i always assumed.

 

It is somewhat complicated but basically independent schools are based in cities and are not part of the county school system. The cities throughout KY have a certain pride in "their" city school and do not want to be part of another city or county school.

dayton and bellevue's population and demographics are not much different than that of newport...combined.

Heard the same rumor, but I think we have all heard the same rumor for the past several years. It makes sense on some level, but when you start trying to figure out who is going to lose their job due to duplication of services...well that's where it gets a little tricky. I personally would love to see it from a sports perspective, but realistically I don't see it happening, at least not in my lifetime.

The only way this could happen is if the school boards in each district agreed. Then the state would have to determine new board, board election boundaries, elections occur etc. Then the new board would then elect Superintendent and determine what facilities will be used for what, principals etc. I doubt this happens.

 

On a side note if any of the three districts cannot balance their budget and go into fiscal problems (which I don't think any of them are) then Campbell County has to absorb them, like it or not. The other way that things can happen is if the independent district wants to dissolve and Campbell County wants to accept them it can happen.

Using the KHSAA's enrollment data from 2012-13 they would have 429 boys, which would put them in 4A.

And this is why it never will happen...too many egos at stake. Erlanger/Elsmere should have gone into Kenton Co. about a decade ago but won't for this very reason. J O B S and nepotism.

All schools in the state are monitored (categorized), only Newport is getting state assistance at the high school for academics ( or were). Dayton has had a state financial audit, but no takeover. Their former Supt. was charged with several violations that I think just went to court. Really all three districts are ok for the most part. Bellevue has rarely had problems, if any. Their scores last year weren't what they wanted in ES, but that is one year out of many good years.

Actually, as BM sort of stated, almost none of the last statement is true. Dayton had a fiscal audit due to reports of misappropriation by one individual, Newport has a very low rating on K-Prep scores and Bellevue's K-Prep scores suffered this past year. NONE of those things involves state intervention or "assistance" in any form.

 

Also, some of you are showing your stereotypical beliefs. I'll bet most of you couldn't give accurate "demographic" data on each of the schools if you had to. Race? Really? Is that an issue for predominantly white Ryle, or Beechwood, or Highlands, or is that only for schools with lower socio-economic populations? Gimme a break.

 

While I will agree that merging the schools would make sense academically and ultimately athletically (with athletics being absolutely NO reason for making such a move), it won't happen anytime soon. And no, it's not about egos, it's about the communities NOT wanting to relinquish their local school. You see, before anything can happen via the Boards, etc., the local voters have to approve dissolution of their local school district. That my friends, "ain't a gonna happen."
