While I see the point you are trying to make the only way this comparison is apples to apples is if the students at Trinity are predominantly gay.

If they're "just words," why do you draw the distinction between that and a racial slur? After all, those are "just words" too.

 

I thought I said I wouldn't be offended enough to complain about it. There is nothing you or anyone could say to me that would offend me, unless it's a threat of violence on my or my family's lives, then I'm going to kill you (general you, obviously) before you have a chance to follow through. Words really don't mean a damn thing to me. Actions are all that matter IMO.

Wow, I cant believe I agree with you so much. Chants like that at ball games do nothing, the other team dont even hear it probably, so it is all wasted air by students saying it. If the team does hear it then they arent focused on the game.

I don't necessarily care that they said it to us......it's that it came out of their mouths, that I am upset. There is obviously a leadership issue in their lives, be it at home, school, amongst their peers, etc........and these are our community's brightest?

Good grief. What the students did was offensive and hopefully they will be reprimanded and made to understand why it was unacceptable. But they are teenagers. Being bone-headed and screwing up then learning from it is part of that stage of life. Denigrating and insulting an entire community and student-body over it is self-righteous beyond repair. Teenagers will learn and mature, you’re the “adult.”

Hmmm, this almost sounds like a challenge to me. I like a good challenge. Let's hang out one night, I have a real talent for being able to push people to the limits (often to the breaking point) with words. Could be fun. :lol2:

But doesn't the boorish behavior reflect on the school? This was a school-sponsored activity after all. The school certainly retains the right, if not duty, to rein this stuff in. It's kind of like the handshake issue: When adults have an opportunity to point kids in the right direction, they should do so. Students should be taught that this type of activity is not acceptable in a civilized society. (I don't care if boorish adults do it at, for instance, NFL games----those people are not role models and the kids should be made aware that they are not.)

Your post was a bit much. "leadership issue in their lives?"

 

Come on. Teenagers , especially in a group, do and say stupid things even though they have been taught better.

 

Don't kill an entire community over a few boneheads.

^ If kids express themselves in this way, there is a lack of effective leadership, in their lives. That's quite clear.

Trust me when I say this. Given a seconds chance the kids at Trinity would (and have) say or do the same kind of juvenile tripe. Trinity's admins step in and stop it.

 

Where I have an issue when it happens is when it's not stopped IMMEDIATELY. As I said earlier the offending chant was only repeated 4 or 5 times before it abruptly stopped. Manual's adults stopped it, end of story.

 

Compared to some of the stuff that flew out of the stands in the "heyday" on Ballard's classlessness this was nothing.
