On the police issue, I was meaning more toward menacing/harassment (i.e., to the point that it would have required ejecting them from the game or at least a very firm warning to "cut that ish out").

 

 

I know that the right thing to do would have been to stop it, but I'm just saying that other than asking them to stop, the request might not have a lot of teeth.

 

I don't know if there's really precedence for a public school suspending students for doing a chant like that. Just because someone has an unpopular and/or uneducated opinion doesn't mean that the school could take actions to correct it. It could be a slippery slope.

 

Seems to me like it would be fairly easy to kick the people out that aren't listening to the warning.

It's high school kids, can't get too worked up over it since it happens everywhere. Kids are idiots. Now it's not right and I believe it shouldn't be allowed. But I'm not as appalled as if it were an adult saying stuff like that.

You said earlier you don't see that type of behavior. The "gay" stuff is always directed at the 3 all-boys schools in the state.

Of course public schools can control what their students say at sporting events. It's not a constitutional issue.

 

And if you suspended and/or ejected them, but didn't do the same when students had pro-homosexual messages delivered on school grounds outside of school hours, you could have a problem on your hands, especially if someone says, "I'm kicked out for x, but they let y go on". It'd definitely be petty for someone to do so, but some people are/can be like that.

 

I was just saying that I can understand why they wouldn't want to go there and take disciplinary action like suspending a student for chanting that at a game.

 

And if they start kicking people out, etc. and they get mad and say "prove it", what do you do? Video taping them doing it for evidence is iffy considering that it involves minors.

 

I'm just saying that if I were a teacher in that situation, I would have personally disapproved and would have even said it was unbecoming, etc. but I don't know how I could have handled something like suspending them, etc.

 

Again, I had already said that if there was an issue with someone doing something that was considered harassment or targeting a known sensitivity, then it would have been more on the police/security at the game to remove them at the teacher's request.

I'm curious whether the Manual students will be allowed to pull the same stunt against St. X this weekend.

To me it depends on how long it went on before it cesed. If the administration acted quickly and stopped the students, then that is about all they could do. Now if they ignored it, shame on them, they neglected their duty in my opinion. Adults are much harder to control and unfortunately, there really isn't much administration can do if it is a large amount. This is not as easily stooped as people would think. Classless and inappropriate without a doubt and no place for it, but I see it and have for a long time at a lot of high school games. To think that your school or fans haven't done this or wouldn't do this is very naive.

Well yeah, because racial slurs are insults. For something to be an insult, doesn't the word have to have negative connotations? To me, the word gay doesn't carry negatives with it, like racial slurs do. If you get offended by someone calling you gay, IMO, it means you think there's something wrong or negative about being gay. :idunno: JMO.

Would I be offended enough to complain about it? Absolutely not. They're words. They don't harm anyone. People need to stop trying to find reasons to complain and be offended IMO. Is it stupid and derogatory? Yes. The word gay is not derogatory. Those words, specifically the homophobic slur, are. All it accomplishes is makes those who are chanting it look like idiots.

If they're "just words," why do you draw the distinction between that and a racial slur? After all, those are "just words" too.
