I have seen multiple coaches in multiple sports quit or be fired after coaching their own children. It is difficult for the kids, difficult for the coach and fans have a ready made cause if anything goes wrong. As to the coaching situation, If you are going to compete, get yourself a coach or coaches who have paid the price to get there. Sounds like the Saturday morning guys got the job.

Worked okay for Chuck Smith and Brandon Smith at Boyle County. But as you said, sometimes it is not a good mix.

To be clear, I believe we are talking about Coach Nagle, not his son that is one of the X QBs.

Coach Browning Nagle is no longer on the sidelines or in the press box as a part of the coaching staff for St. Xavier on gameday and is a parent cheering on his son B.J. He is on a "come when his schedule permits" role as for practice. He has not attended a practice in over a week and seemed to be comfortable on Friday with staying away from the situation for the good of all parties.

I understand St X currently has 6 other fathers on their staff with sons in the program.

There are situations I don't have issues with as much when parents coach their kids.

1. Coach has been on coaching staff long before son gets to high School. totally different than when aa coach just becomes a coach on the varsity when his son gets to varsity.

 

2. I know it may sound a little biased, but for some reason I don't have a big problem when the son doesn't play a skill position, the only favoritsm that comes into play then is if the son is playing in front of a better player. When a coach is in a position to call plays for example and thier son plays a skill position, well that can get really ugly unless the coach is very professional.

 

There are some very good fathers who coach their kids and no problems or conflict of interest ever arise, I know of a few personally and I think they do a great job. Unfortunatley there are others that aare only coaching to get their son on the playing field in front of other players who may be better and that is when it can get really ugly, a lot of resentment among the players themselves which spills over into the stands.

I went to maybe the first or second practice of the summer and when I saw the relationship, I already knew how it was going to be. There was a ton of favoritism shown to the younger nagle.

Hard to say. St. X does not recognize coaches in their team photos or have them listed anywhere on the football pages at their website. Flores has a freshmen TE. I have no idea who the entourage is they have as freshmen coaches now.

It takes a certain chemistry for it to work. The father has to be willing to put his desires for his son's personal success aside and the son can not rely on his father to help him any more then any other player.

 

You are right and that certain chemistry is: A kid better be a stud if his dad is a coach or people will always wonder. Best of luck to St. X the rest of the way.
