I do not really know the history behind it all. If it is universally offensive then no. If is just a politically correct wing, then yes.

 

My guess is the pressure will continue to intensify until Daniel Snyder is labeled a racist, protests will increase because we all know people love to protest whether offended or not, and the name will be changed.

If Native Americans are upset and protesting he needs to listen. If a bunch of PC police are protesting then I'd turn the fire hose on them.

While I don't think the Redskins should change their name, the Blackhawks is quite different. Chief Black Hawk was considered the most famous Sauk Indian tribe leader. Not really a disparaging term IMO.

There is a difference. I think most Native Americans do not mind if the actual name of a tribe or chief is used. It is when a term that was commonly used to put down Native Americans is used such as when white men would refer to those !@#$'ed, Savage Redskins, that is when they get sensitive.

 

For example, I don't believe most (emphasis on most) Seminole tribe members have a problem with Florida State referring to themselves as the Seminoles. To the best of my knowledge, FSU does not portray the Seminoles as being blood thirsty, savages, just proud natives who fought brave so I do not believe there has been much of a protest towards FSU.

 

I do not believe Redskins is seen as being as offensive as the N word. I believe it is more commonly compared to calling women chicks or broads. If a WNBA team were to come to Louisville, I don't think many women would be happy if the owner called the team the Louisville Broads, howeer, I would love to see Rockmom's expression if they did.

My guess is Dan Snyder will take the same approach the governing members of Augusta National did over women members. There was no way the governing members were going to give in to the protesters back in 2002 even if there were women they wanted to invite to Augusta. They waited till the protested went away and then invitd Condi and (I forget her name) on THEIR terms. Dan may very well wait for this to die down, let people forget about it and then maybe change the name.

I have heard of people who did not know the Polish were offended by the phrase, Pollocks. I guess someone has to point it out to you first, don't know.
