I took it as they weren't energetic. From my experience at the two day games I've worked (yesterday being one of them), the type of fan there isn't the type to get energized. A lot of fans (completely generalizing) are on two different type of field trips. There are a lot of elementary kids from schools (at least yesterday in right field) and elderly from the retirement home. I'm not sure what it is about far down the first base line (maybe section 135-136) but the two day games I've worked the average fan in those section is probably 60. Combine that with a 1-0 shutout by the opposing team and you aren't going to get a lot of noise if free pizza isn't on the line.

September 26, 201313 yr And i took it both ways." He said a Mets player raised similar issues Tuesday night: “You guys are in the middle of a pennant race and no one’s here. What’s going on?’’ And again with the school and day game excuses. Tell that to a Cardinal fan or a Giant fan and they will laugh at you. Hence why they average over 40,000 fans at their games. We average 10,000 less. THIS is my biggest issue. Reds fans do nothing but run the team down. 90 win season, playoffs for the 3rd time in 4 years, and you would think by talking to a Reds fan that we had the worst team in the league.

I took that as someone else's opinion, not Ludwick's. He went on to talk about energy, not lack of attendance.
September 26, 201313 yr Curious, how many games do you go to? Knew that was the next question. Season ticket holder for 9 years. So yes, i do my share. And i have also played the game at a very high level. So i know what it means to play in the middle of a no name town with 2,000 fans there, having a promotion on the field every half inning. And i also know what it feels like to play in front of a packed house. Whether they are "energized" every second of the game as you seem to think he is saying or not. It makes a difference.

Maybe because we expect more out of them? This team has seemed to sleepwalk through the season. They play to their opponents level constantly. Hal McCoy brought it up in the pre game show, this team lacks a leader. If this team had a leader then they wouldn't have to be energized by the crowd, they'd go out and do their job. I took Ryan Ludwicks interview as a cop out for poor performance.

September 26, 201313 yr Maybe it's just me but I don't see this Reds team as very "energetic." Phillips has defensive flair, but he doesn't seem really rah! rah! Votto, Bruce, Choo, Ludwick and Cozart seem like some of the most boring people on earth. The manager is never getting too fired up. That doesn't make them a bad team - far from it. But I don't see tons of passion on the field. I see a very workmanlike manner. And so the fans seem to go about attending and cheering in a similar way.

For a team that has 90 wins, is going to the playoffs, and went pretty much most of their season without Broxton, Marshal, Cueto, and a healthy Ludwick, (who if you missed spring training was crushing the ball) i wouldn't exactly call that "underachieving".

This team is in 3rd place in their division with 3 games left, that is underachieving to me. I don't care how many injury issues there is. STL has had its issues and still is going strong. This city expects more. How well did the fan energy go last year in the playoffs? Players win games, not fans. They make millions of dollars to win games, do your job and win and the fans will come. Being just good enough isn't gonna cut it anymore here.

The Cardinals did not lose their ace and 2 best set up men for most of the year, nor did they lose their 4 hitter for 5 months. And again your theory makes no sense. They are winning! And to play the other side, why didnt the fans come out last year during the final stretch of the season? Last year was the same story, did they underachive then to? September 26, 201313 yr Reds are small-market team that draws fans from wide area. That's why weekend series are well-attended and Monday-to-Wednesday series are under-attended, as a rule. Example of the latter would be the four-game series vs. Cards in early September. As far as lack of fan enthusiasm, I think some fans are still reeling from the three-game home collapse vs. Giants in first round of playoffs last year. I was at games 3 and 5, and the atmosphere was electric. Then all the air went out of the balloon.
