I'm curious what the formula for this ranking is. Obviously has a lot to do with how strong the computer feels the team's opponents are. BG with a 94, NCC with a 70 although struggling thus far, Caldwell County's low rating (probably again, due to the system's view of their SOS), also Mayfield's seemingly ridiculous rating for a 1A school (again, definitely has to do with the quality teams they have faced thus far). I still can't wrap my mind around though that SK is legitimately top 10 in state this year from the seems of it. Not knocking it at all, they seem to be pretty good and I'm curious how they finish out this year.

 

At this point you have to have Simon Kenton in the top 10. They will likely stay there most of the year. The second last game of the season they play Dixie Heights. That game is going to be a good one and may be the only game that keeps them from an undefeated season. SK plays Campbell County two weeks before that and that will be a tough one also, but I think the Dixie game is their toughest challenge this year.

I can't put any credibility in this poll (if there would ever be in the first place) until all teams considered have played two games.

If I may borrow a theme from the Reds game threads, that is why the "eye test" is often needed versus pure stats.

 

As gchs posted above, this rating system will get more accurate as the season moves on and more data is included. Here are some details on the data Cantrall uses:

 

 

Litkenhous used a "difference-by-score" formula similar to many used today, although adjustments have been made with time. Cantrall uses a formula based on offense, defense, margin of victory, strength of schedule, win-loss records and opponents win-loss records. He could tell you the formula, but then he'd be out of a job.

As you can see, this article is from 2004. It could be the formula has been tweaked since then. There also is information and comments about Massey in the article.

Computerized calculations of available data (and after three weeks there isn't much). It doesn't necessarily mean one team is better, but it will eventually be fairly accurate by the late season.

I disagree on the rating/ranking thing. But you are right about them being way off early in the season. They always are. It is the same reason the BCS Ratings never came out until October. There just wasn't enough information this early in the season to give an accurate account.

It's a compliment and is impressive. In the computer they're just way above 1A in this statistical category. Like I said, it definitely has to do with Mayfield's games to start the season.
