Agree or Disagree?

Defiantly and definitely disagree. No way should LexCath not have moved in the rankings after getting mollywhoped by the Purples. Had they lost by a td or less, keep them at 4. They lost 48-21. That's 4 touchdowns. They should have to earn their way back up. Not have it handed to them. If Boyle County loses to Warren Central I expect them to remain at #5.

The only thing I would change is the format:

1. Highlands vs. 6A Campbell County

2. Covington Catholic at 6A Dixie Heights

3-6 Collins, LexCath, Boyle, Johnson Central

7. Madisonville North Hopkins -- OPEN

8. Owensboro at 5A Apollo

9. Russell County vs. 1A Campbellsville

10. Knox Central vs. 5A Southwestern at Corbin

The position of the rankings are dead on IMO, but there is a very clear hierarchy in this class.

This is last week. Preseason rankings.

No movement at all? LexCath should be lower and Madisonville-North Hopkins should be higher at the very least.

1. Highlands vs. University Christian (FL) (8/24)

2. Covington Catholic at 6A Boone County

3. Collins vs. 6A #6 Simon Kenton

4. Lexington Catholic vs. 5A #1 Bowling Green at Western Kentucky University (8/24)

5. Boyle County at 5A Lincoln County

6. Johnson Central -- OPEN

7. Madisonville North Hopkins vs. 5A #3 Warren Central at Greenwood

8. Owensboro at 6A Daviess County

9. Russell County vs. Taylor County at Campbellsville University (8/24)

10. Knox Central vs. Atherton

Madisonville-North Hopkins should be higher after defeating the Preseason #3 team in 5A.

Am I the only one cofused by the seemingly state-wide adoration of Collins? I know they made the finals last season, but they also lost three regular season games and came out of the west, which didn't have one team in the top 7 of the state in 4A. And when they got to the finals they were absolutely destroyed by Highlands - it was never close. Then they opened this season with a loss at home to a good-not-great Simon Kenton club. I understand that they probably could be good by November, but I'm not sure any of the descriptions I just gave of Collins would have happened to either Boyle or Lexington Catholic.

What team below LC would have had a smaller margin in their loss had they played what is potentially the #1 team in the state?

That's a fair question. My opinion is based on the fact that if LexCath were in 5A what would they be ranked and why do they get a pass for getting smashed? Right now we don't know who below them would have a smaller margin but we know they had a huge margin unbefitting of a team ranked #4 in arguably the toughest class in the state. I'd argue that LexCath could be the #3 team if they were in 5A. If they were in 5A and still lost by this margin would they drop in the 5A rankings? Warren Central dropped for losing to Madisonville-North Hopkins who by the same token didn't move up for defeating the #3 team in 5A.

Fair question. I too was wondering about the Collins lovefest and just figured they returned a bunch of starters and got credit for as much.

Didn't Boyle defeat Collins last season? Or was that the year before?

Let's call a spade a spade though... there is a strong chance BG may beat every other team in 5A not named John Hardin by the same margin or worse than LexCath. We are talking about possibly the best team in the State regardless of class.

Obviously, ranking teams is a mixture of art and science and this early in the season it is heavy on the art.

I agree a case could be made for Madisonville to move up, but their win over Warren Central is a bit of a puzzle because according to everyone who saw it that WC team was not good and certainly not the #3 ranked team in 5A. The consensus apparently is that WC was really overrated and Madisonville is right about where the voters thought they would be. The movement of WC down in the 5A rankings and Madisonville's lack of movement in the 4A rankings is more of a reflection on WC than Madisonville. Given that Johnson Central looked really strong in both scrimmages and they haven't yet played a real game, I can understand the reluctance to move Madisonville ahead of them.

PP92, what would your Top 10 look like? As you rank each team use the following criteria: Rank each team as if they played today, each team would beat the team(s) below them? That's it. Doesn't matter what they were ranked last week or last year, think only of the here and now.

and Madisonville is right about where the voters thought they would be.

It's also worth noting that the other preseason rankings didn't even have Madisonville ranked in the top 10, let alone ranked 7th.

Yes they did 49-26. The game really was not that close either.

SoS counts for nothing? Who else is playing two of the Kentucky teams in weeks 1 and 2?

The big 4 (or giant 1 and big 3) in 4A are probably still tops.
