I agree with everyone here. Lex Cath should not be discounted because they lost to BG. Collins should be looked at more closely in losing to SK, but SK is a ranked 6A school so it is hard to drop them for losing to a team they should lose to based on rankings and school size. HOWEVER ... I think PP92 has a good point on Boyle County. I think Boyle should have moved up to #3 and Lex Cath and Collins should each move down one.

Am I the only one cofused by the seemingly state-wide adoration of Collins? I know they made the finals last season, but they also lost three regular season games and came out of the west, which didn't have one team in the top 7 of the state in 4A. And when they got to the finals they were absolutely destroyed by Highlands - it was never close. Then they opened this season with a loss at home to a good-not-great Simon Kenton club. I understand that they probably could be good by November, but I'm not sure any of the descriptions I just gave of Collins would have happened to either Boyle or Lexington Catholic.

I'll take a stab at this, have you met the Collins Coaching Staff? They are a great group of people that I think most football fans would like if they met them. They do a great job of promoting the program and their players. They play a fun type of football, the players like it, the fans like it, and just about any football fan would like it. They started the school and did things correctly, they built a beautiful school, campus, and football facility. And, in the three years they have been in existence, they have completed and excelled.

 

Now, for the kicker, I would say (even thought Collins got beaten pretty severely by Highlands) most people that follow 4A think Collins has the best chance of ever beating Highlands. People get excited about that.

I just feel like if you lose then you should drop at least one. SK gained respect for beating Collins but Collins lost none for losing to SK and LexCath got manhandled. Like I said, had they lost by a touchdown or two...fine, keep LexCath at #4. They lost by 27 points in a game that most people thought would be closer and suffered no penalty because of who whipped them. Hardly seems fair. Based on the logic floating around now, Boyle County can defeat Warren Central worse than Madisonville-North Hopkins did, LexCath can lose to St. X by 27 and still be ranked higher than Boyle County at 0-2 while Boyle is 2-0.

 

I guess we'll just have to wait for Boyle County/LexCath part 1 before Boyle will get to move up in the rankings since Collins and LexCath can lose and stay put based on SOS.

I know they have a couple college-level players, but is there something about their size, skill, style, etc. that makes them more capable of beating Highlands? I guess I misunderstood your previous question. I though you were asking why people like Collins. I was talking in general, nothing about rankings.

 

As for the college level players, yes, they have three I think that have verbally committed. How many other teams can say that? That's pretty impressive. Plus, this is early in the season, and getting the finals last year with most of the starters returning does play a factor in early season rankings.

Okay, confusion averted. And your point about success last season and returning starters is a good one. But I would still argue they got that far because western Kentucky 4A was awful, whereas Boyle and Catholic were knocked off by superior teams in earlier rounds. I can give Collins the 5 spot today, but I just can't put them ahead of CovCath, LexCath or Boyle.

I can see that argument. And maybe the west being weak played a role in Collin's success, but they did get there and like I said this is an early season poll where last years success and returning starters are going to play a role. Three D1 commits does mean something.

 

I don't necessarily follow Collins, but I did see quite a few of their players this summer at camps/combines and I have to say I was impressed.
