Nice win for BG. My prediction was 48-17. This was based on my respect for what BG is doing and common opponents even if LC is a different team from last yr.

 

BG may very well be the best team in the State of KY this yr and that is awesome and perhaps deserving. BG test will be against St X, good luck in that one as it will be the game to see.

 

I got a feeling though that a lot of BG faithful got a false sense of "Highlands is not that good" after watching them on TV yesterday and feel as if Highlands gets all the attention just because they are Highlands. Well Highlands has earned it over some 100 yrs and yes they deserve the respect whether people like it or not.

 

Not trying to do the threadjack thingy but my ears were burning and just had to come see what the fuss was all about.

I didn't get a false sense about anything. I thought Highlands did a great job against University Christian. No one is downing Highlands. We are just like you. We think we have a very good team, as you do. It's only natural that our fans think we are the best, just as your fans think Highlands is. The only thing said in this thread about Highlands was said out of respect for their program. Every team in the state, except for maybe Trinity, envies Highlands.

I thought your QB did a good job tonight. The line play was what really hurt LC on both sides of the ball. Bowling Green was able to run the ball which opened up passing lanes. The Logan kid had a long kickoff return for a touchdown for Lex. Cath. There were a few bright spots.

 

I do not think our line play was 'bad' but it was over matched physically. And Tisdale is a handful with or without good blocking. And most of the night it was with. Given the mostly wholesale replacement of the lines this year last night was probably more of a positive - Sophomore Colin Carpenter (#57) and Junior Cameron Baily (#64) are 'the big guys' and did well. Senior Marty Brown had a solid night as well. But, as it has been for a few years, the line is usually giving up over 150 lbs. to the other side.

 

Defensive Secondary bright spots - Solid play by seniors Josh Mesmer and two-way senior Noah Mitchell. The up and comers who had good games were juniors Braxton Couch (#33) and Cody Mitchell (#7). Both showed great speed and coverage. The Knights were able to keep the short passing game in check with good coverage and these guys were key to that.

 

Offensively - Ryan/Bouvier was good combination. The other (younger) receivers struggled - not sure if it was first game jitters or just not yet in synch with Ryan's passing. Logan showed he can leverage that 4.3 speed in the open field but why the coaching staff tried to run in short yardage plays between the tackles is a mystery. Noah Mitchell is the true full back and the staff seems unable to put the right package in for the some of the plays. And their affinity for slow developing draw plays is not helpful.

 

So this game did have bright spots for the Knights. But discipline and execution issues in the second quarter started the landslide. That can not happen against good (or great) teams - like BG (or St. X or you know who...).

Bowling Green and Boyle only had 100 years to schedule the Birds. So BG ups the anti and now the Birds duck them, hilarious. BG may or may not be the best team in the state, but it's hard to tell from the lackluster schedule. Boyle wins all those state titles in a row until the Birds come to town, then schedule the Birds only to drop them. Credibility is the key now, and with only two or three WORTHY opponents at the beginning of the season you can understand why people outside BG are skeptical. BG should schedule some GCL South teams in Cincinnati and play some better programs in KY if they want to play the we are the best in state card.

 

When the Birds play Elder at the pit and Trinity plays Colerain, if things work out that both KY teams win those games, it will have a HUGE effect on who is #1 in the state. I can't disagree with BG being #1 right now, but there is a lot of football left to be played.

 

As been posted earlier in this thread, BG will have to rebuild for several years before getting close to this years team. Like it or not, being #1 for one season is nothing compared to the Highlands and Trinity PROGRAMS from over the years. Enjoy it while you can. :popcorn:

Highlands has 22 state titles. Bowling Green has 3. It's not like they are going to catch up anytime soon. it's just like preseason polls, it's too early to know who is the best team in the state. If the Purples win all of their cupcake games this season, I will go with them.
