LexCath scored first, did OK through about mid-2nd quarter, and then BG choked the life out of them.

 

No one is beating BG this year. I thought maybe X, but no, I am confident now more than ever that they will have 45 straight wins by the end of this year. My goodness what a team.

What DragonFire said. BG is the best team in the state.

I know everyone thinks we drank the kool-aid but it is a very special team. I know we are not being fair to them by putting this label on them. We will take it one game at a time. Reality kicks back in next year. Here is my frustration. If we ever had a legit shot of beating Highlands it has been the last couple of years. My concern (fear) is that new class alignments will come in near future and Highlands/BG matchups will come. It will take a couple of years to catch our breath after this run is over. I know future matchups will make us better but I would have loved to see them play one another in last year or two. I am not a Highland hater. Actually, Highland admirer. This could have been our shot. Oh well. Next few weeks we have our hands full.

I know this feeling. The Boyle County/Highlands was two years too late for competitive games. Boyle's best chance to beat Highlands was in 2009-2010.

Unless I'm reading the tea leaves very wrong, you needn't worry about seeing them because you're in the same class. Highlands is firmly 4A. Bowling Green is firmly 5A. The only reason they were in the same class before was because there wasn't a 4A NKY district, so Highlands and CovCath played up. That isn't the case anymore, and they have no reason to play up. Now, if BG schedules Highlands during the regular season, that would be something different altogether.

Offensive Player of the Game: You need to ask???

 

Defensive Player of the Game: Tyler Jopes, LB, 5-9, 170. Almost ran back an interception for a score. Had his hands full with LexCath's plethora of receivers and really good running backs.

 

This game was a total team effort, as pretty much everybody contributed to the win. Just like last year, the Purples had to come from behind to win, and the score could have been worse with a break here and there.

 

BGHS will travel to LexCath to play in their bowl game against Bryan Station Saturday, while LexCath will take on BGHS's third opponent, St Xavier.

 

We had a great time at the game, highlighted by a special guest for the coin flip: former BGHS and US Military Academy QB Trent Steelman! I got to salute my superior officer, and he returned in kind. I also saw his older brother, Tyson, who is the QB Coach at South Warren. Their father, Bob Steelman, certainly did a super job raising two sons, and I'm very proud of both of them! They both will always be my boys too!

 

I also saw two other great Purples tonight: my classmate (Class of 1977) and QB Doug Beard, and his elder son Ryan, who play a whole lot of football at WKU as a DB. Their father, the late Monie Beard, was a mentor to literally over a thousand Purples in his too short lifetime. It was a great night for Mrs PH and me! I got my photo made with a very influential lady in our community as well, Mr. Beard's widow, Betty Jo, a fellow BGHS graduate! This will be a night neither of us will soon forget!:thumb::thumb::thumb:

 

I'd also like to mention that my in-laws just moved in from WA State a few months ago and my brother-in-law had never seen a football game before. He got his eyes full tonight with two games, and has become a bona fide BGHS Fan immediately. Purple Nation has welcomed him with open arms!

Hayes would be perfect for WKU. He will probably get so many academic scholarships that it won't cost Western much. The kid is really smart. Every Ivy League School wants him, but not much attention from other D-1 schools. The way he scrambled around tonight was much better than last year. One of the best Quarterbacks in the state.

I know LC lost but who stood out for the Knights? Hopefully this drubbing prepares them for the rest of the season.

I thought your QB did a good job tonight. The line play was what really hurt LC on both sides of the ball. Bowling Green was able to run the ball which opened up passing lanes. The Logan kid had a long kickoff return for a touchdown for Lex. Cath. There were a few bright spots.

Looking forward to the BG - X game at X on Sept. 6. Can you say intense barn burner!!!!! If X improves from week 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3.... Should be a great competitive game. If X plays like they did Friday, then BG streak will be alive....

These two teams do have very similar styles. But this year BG is simply loaded at the key positions and more physically mature and disciplined team. The BG's Blue Tisdale did a great job on the ground and Faint provided the long range firepower. The Knights had key turnovers and mistakes at key points. Two offsides on a 3rd and long to keep a BG drive going and a interception in their own red zone put the Knights on the ropes at the end of the first half. Discipline and execution - sigh.... A good drive by BG to open the 2nd half put the game mostly out of reach. I was surprised at how much BG went with the run - but with the big line and big, strong Blue Tisdale getting solid yardage almost each carry, the Purples seemed content to the run the ground and pound game. In HS ball - that works just fine. The Knight defense played solid against the shorter passes much of the night but keeping Faint in a bottle with 1 on 1 coverage - nada. The defenders were on their assignments and coverage was not at all busted. But those were perfect routes and perfect passes on those long balls - hard to defend.

 

Good to see Tyler Jopes get MVP for defense. I know he took a year off after a great middle school 'career' - including being the first 7th Grade MVP at the national All-American Bowl. Talked with his proud father on the sidelines and glad to see Tyler being a part of this team and seems to be in great form.
